100 New Movies Challenge: July 2021 Edition Pt 1
Having time off really helps to catch back up on the 100 Movie Challenge. July was filled with movies and the rest of the year should be as well. 14 new movies were added to our watch total so it’ll be split up to a more digestible form.
Luca – Disney+
After Raya and the Last Dragon didn’t feel like the strongest film, expectations were low for Luca. Unfortunately, this is another family-friendly film that won’t be enjoyed by the whole family. Maybe the magic has worn off in our older age but Disney rarely has the hits that it used to. Anyone who loves Disney movies should watch to cross it off their list, but in the end, it’s a middle-of-the-pack film with very little heart.
The Orange Years – Hulu
If anyone wanted to go back to the glory days of Nickelodeon and how it was created then the Orange Years is the documentary for you. It goes all the way back before Nick was Nick and paints a picture of the wild and crazy days of mayhem. Back before the Spongebob years, it goes back to the fantastic days of Double Dare, Salute Your Shorts, Hey Dude, and everything in between. If you’re an 80’s & 90’s baby and want to relive your childhood check it out.
Doctor Strange – Disney+
How exactly did I make it through the entire Infinity Saga movies and never watch Doctor Strange? Don’t ask, there’s really no answer. Somehow every time I put it on I’d fall asleep, that’s it. That’s not even a commentary on the movie itself, which was great and helped me understand more of the current Marvel movies. There are a few hints at what might be to come as well. Go back and watch Doctor Strange before moving forward with the rest of the MCU.
Space Jam: A New Legacy – HBO Max
This was a tough one. I wanted so bad to go into this with an open mind but all my fears came true. Before anyone starts throwing shade with the “Lebron hate” comments, he wasn’t even what was wrong with the movie. If anything his personality made it a little better. At its core, it was a children’s movie for children, however, that’s no excuse for this one. This seemed like a desperate attempt from the studio to stay relevant in movies for kids and they just can’t compete. They threw everything but the kitchen sink at you and it felt like the script suffered. Lebron James was good as was the rest of the cast, but this one felt like it was a letdown.
More Movies: 100 New Movies Challenge May 2021
A Quiet Place II – Paramount+
Now A Quiet Place II, that’s a whole different story. There aren’t too many sequels that are as good as the original but AQP pulls it off. With the perfect balance of suspense and intrigue, it was great to get back into the lives of the Abbott family and how they survive. This movie opened up the world a little bit beyond the farm and we got to see just how the rest of the world is living or trying to. It was a thoroughly enjoyable sequel and we can’t wait to get more of these movies.
Our Friend – Prime Video
Our Friend was a random find on Amazon Prime Video. I stumbled upon it looking for a good indie film to watch. Based on a real-life story of a woman dying of cancer and the toll it takes on her family and friends. The movie itself, like a lot of indie films, was a bit slower but had a ton of heart. If you’ve ever been through it, or know someone who has, take a chance on this one.
Unfit – The Psychology of Donald Trump – Hulu
Another documentary that I felt obligated to watch. Diving deep in the psychological whim of the former President of the United States, unfit interviews staff and former aides to figure out just how off the deep end Donald Trump is/was. Without getting into politics, this might be a documentary you can take decent information from no matter what party you side with.
