100 New Movies Challenge: July 2021 Part II
Coming up on the second half of our July New Movies Challenge, we’re rolling right along with more movies to review.
Without Remorse – Amazon Prime Video
After the success of Jack Ryan, Amazon Prime Video took on another Tom Clancy project Without Remorse. With the rise of Michael B. Jordan, this movie should’ve been better than it was. The problem wasn’t the movie or the actors, but more minor director’s choices. There’s a scene in the movie inside a prison where there could’ve been more emotion and it seemed like the choice to hold back fit more into the title of the movie than being a more powerful moment. There are such minor things that changed the impact of an overall good movie.
Willy’s Wonderland – Hulu
If you need a stereotypical bad teen horror film then Willy’s Wonderland is for you. Nic Cage stars in this one and despite not saying a single line in the film, he was the bright spot. This one was so bad, you almost kind of liked it. Willy’s Wonderland is one of the weirdest movies I’ve watched about a Chuck E. Cheese-style restaurant where the animatronics are possessed and kill anyone locked in with them. It’s not a big-budget film but it will fulfill your horror cravings.
Sonic the Hedgehog – Hulu
Paramount seems to be fairing a little better than Warner Bros. when it comes to family-friendly movies. While at times Sonic was a bit goofy, it played a lot better to the entire family. With a good cast and not overdoing the cheesiness, this one is more of a family movie night film that most can at least stomach.
More Movies: July 100 New Movies Challenge
The Map of Tiny Perfect Things – Amazon Prime Video
If you need a little-known movie that has heart then The Map of Tiny Perfect Things can be it. What most would call a “chick flick” it’s a drama about two young adults stuck in a Groundhog Day situation. Until meeting each other they assume they’re the only ones stuck in the loop. They find each other and grow close but something is holding them back. Not fantastic but it’s a good date-night in kind of movie.
The Tomorrow War – Amazon Prime Video
Chris Pratt stars in this future suspense thriller. This one echoes A Quiet Place with a species of aliens who live to feed off humans. The main difference is, as the title says it hasn’t happened yet. The Tomorrow War isn’t the best alien movie, nor is it the best Chris Pratt film but it puts a spin on monsters and is unique enough to keep you interested.
Gemini Man – Hulu
Gemini Man was tough. It was considered a box office bomb, but it wasn’t as bad as it was made out to be. The issue? It wasn’t as good as it was supposed to be. Will Smith can usually carry a film and he did just fine. However, Gemini Man would’ve been well-received had it not been sent to the box office and went to streaming instead.
Freaky – HBO Max
Starring Vince Vaughn, this one was a bit of a surprise. A horror/comedy that was better than expected. Vince Vaughn has a knack for comedy and plays off well in almost every role he takes. A lot of his acting stays the same but he still pulls it off. If you need a Scream-style movie that ought to be better than expected go ahead and pop this one on.
