2018 NFL Draft Grades: New York Giants were able to fill holes

The New York Giants entered the 2018 NFL Draft coming off one of the worst years in the franchise history. They had a ton of holes that they needed to fill and it seemed that General Manager Dave Gettleman would end up focusing his attention on filling these holes.

Round 1 – Running Back Saquon Barkley Penn State

This move showed Giants fans that they don’t follow the Jerry Reese mindset. There were a lot of people who thought that they would take a QB like Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, or Josh Allen. Baker Mayfield was off the board by their pick. This was the feeling because the Eli Manning era is coming to an end and they don’t have a future QB (as of this pick). Saquon Barkley was the best available player in the draft and the Giants went with him. I suspect that he will be a huge asset to the offense and to Eli Manning.

Round 2 – Guard Will Hernandez UTEP

This was a great pickup because it helps the Giants fill another hole. The Giants seem to have had problems in the last few seasons when it comes to the offensive line. They already signed Nate Solder to a deal to bring him in to help the left side. Scouts expect that Hernandez should be starting for this team when the season starts.

Round 3 – OLB Lorenzo Carter Georgia

It seemed that the New York Giants were very high on filling the holes on the defensive side. Lorenzo Carter would end up being the first of many defensive players picked by the Giants. This was a big pickup because the Giants seem to never address the LB position and Carter has the ability to also become a starter when camp begins. What makes the addition of Carter to Giants a great pick is that he is a pass rusher and it seems that Giants haven’t had one of those in some time.

Round 3 – DT BJ Hill NC State

You can essentially say the same for BJ Hill that was said for Will Hernandez. Hill is someone who has the ability to become a starter when training camp begins and one that could be a nice addition to this team.

Round 4 – QB Kyle Lauletta Richmond

This was a surprise, but not a shocker. This was a surprise because a lot of people thought the Giants were going to take a QB earlier, but it seemed this was the guy that they wanted. There are some scouts who think that Kyle could surpass Davis Webb and become the heir to the New York Giants once Eli Manning retires, but we will wait and see.

Round 5 – DT RJ McIntosh Miami

I’d be curious to see how he plays out. He did decently at Miami and it will be interesting to see how he does on the big level known as the NFL. It surely helped fill a need that the Giants needed.

Overall, I felt the New York Giants had a really good draft. They made a splash selecting Barkley at Number 2. Adding Hernandez and Hill will help and Kyle Lauletta could be the one to take over the team once Eli Manning does retire. Between the offseason and the draft, the Giants are giving their fans a ton of hope for the 2018 season.
