3 Offseason Moves the Miami Dolphins Must Make
While there has been plenty of buzz surrounding who will be brought in to coach, no moves have been made. With all that in mind, the Miami Dolphins will have less time to prepare as the other head coaching vacancies have already been filled. From here on out, the new regime still has to decide who stays, who goes, who fits their future vision in free agency and what their draft plan of attack is.
Make no mistake about it they have an uphill task, but 3 things need to happen for Miami:
Draft a quarterback.
The Miami Dolphins have been stuck with this “will he/won’t he” merry-go-round from current quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Between his latest round of injuries and yet another inconsistent year, if for some strange reason they don’t replace him they need to find a capable back up to push him to get better. Tannehill has never had a back up that was ever going to challenge his starting job. Sorry, Matt Moore/Brock Osweiler fans but there was never any doubt who the starter was going to be.
If the Dolphins want to fix their woes, its time to create a quarterback controversy in Miami. Keep kicking tires on every QB who might be able to push this team to the next level.
Solidify the Offensive Line:
There are many around the NFL who will say “keep drafting a quarterback until you get it right”. The same should be said for the offensive line. The unit for the Dolphins has shown it can be one of the better in the leagues, then the following week look like the worst. Miami needs to find the top 5 guys who can give the quarterback time in the passing game as well as open holes in the run and do both with consistency. The current offensive line seems to do 2 of the 3 things at best.
It’s time for the Dolphins to dig in, sign some free agents, draft some more and keep signing until they get it right. Word to the wise, Miami. Teams with the best offensive lines in football typically don’t have the 31st ranked offense in the league.
Fix the middle of the Defense:
The Miami Dolphins have also been stuck with a great supporting cast on defense but can never get over the hump. They’ve gone out and got the flashiest names to rush the quarterback. They’ve got a young, aggressive bunch of DBs. They’ve even drafted a couple young and talented linebackers. However, Miami still struggles every year on defense.
Rather than blow up the whole unit and start again, Miami must find their game-changing linebackers. No matter how good your pass rush is, no matter how lockdown your DBs are, if opposing offenses can change the pace of the game by barreling through the middle, its a wrap. If your team can’t stop opposing TE’s from 4-5 yard gains per catch, chalk it up as a loss. The middle of the defense has been the Achilles’ Heel for the Dolphins for years. Great playmakers have come and gone because they appear to be doing enough. Wake up, Miami. The Middle of your defense needs attention.
It will be an offseason that seems to last forever. With ownership not having too many expectations for wins next season, this year will truly begin the rebuild. Harder times are coming for the Miami Dolphins and their fans. Could this finally be the way Stephen Ross gets it right?
