Baseball Throwback: New York Mets 19 inning affair going into July 5th
As Americans are celebrating Independence Day, it got me thinking of some of the more memorable baseball moments to happen. You have the famous speech by Lou Gehrig gave in which he said he was the luckiest man on the planet, Mickey Mantle hit number 300 and Nolan Ryan obtained strikeout number 4,000. We also saw Dave Righetti pitched a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox.
However, there was a memorable moment for the New York Mets on this day. On July 4, 1985, the New York Mets were playing the Atlanta Braves. The reason for why this game is memorable was due to the fact that it went into the early hours of the next day. The game was supposed to have started at around 7:00 eastern. The first rain delay that had would end up pushing back the game to a start a time of 9:04 pm est. Personally, I feel sorry for the people who actually stayed for the whole game. However, it didn’t end until 3:55 AM. If you happened to have stayed for the game, then you get all my credit for waiting out this game. This was due to the game going into extra innings and seeing a small rain delay. One of the bigger moments from this game was the Rick Camp home run.
In this game, the Mets started with Dwight Gooden and he only lasted a few innings. It got very bad because they ended up using Ron Darling for one inning. This game saw 46 hits, 22 walks, 37 runners left on base, five errors, two ejections, and etc. There were people who went to bed and woke up the next morning thinking they were seeing highlights for the game, they were still watching the game. The Mets ended up winning the game 16-13 in 19 innings. Here is a small bit of the game as you would have seen it in 1985:
