Acapulco – Season 2 Recap – Maximo’s Big Reveal

Acapulco Chad, Maximo, and Julia

In my opinion, Acapulco has quietly moved up the ranks as one of Apple TV+’s best shows. This season took some risks and they paid off in the long run. Looking back on it, there’s plenty to discuss. Season 3 might be off on the distant horizon but by the end of season 2, we knew what we had to look forward to out of the gang at Las Colinas.

(spoilers ahead)

This season started off with the fallout of the New Year’s Eve party last season. Julia was engaged to Chad, Maximo thought Don Pablo betrayed him, and he had just missed out on a big promotion. All this leads Maximo down a not so honest path, but also down an unexpected path with a new crush. Isabel shows up at Las Colinas and the two instantly connect. As the Acapulco goes on in season 2, we see their relationship blossom as his friendship with Julia seems to be falling apart.

But their relationship wasn’t the only one falling apart. Nora might have been getting closer with Esteban, her relationship with Sara after a revealing discovery. Maximo’s relationship with Diane strengthens but then deteriorates when she finds him to be the mole. Season two was all about strengthening relationships and ones that fell apart.

By the end, the biggest relationship to fall apart was Maximo’s and Isabel’s. The cat came out of the bag and Isabel saw the connection between Maximo and Julia growing. Her instinct leads to her relationship fall apart and she decides to walk away. When Chad leaves to discover himself, Julia also sees her relationship fracture. By the end she and Maximo finally confess thier feelings and dive in head first.

However, that wasn’t the only reveal. All season long they were teasing who Maximo could be avoiding. In the finale we find out just who that someone was. It wasn’t Chad, or Julia, or even Diane. The person he was strugglig to show up for, was his own (unnamed so far) daughter. The final scene, the door opens and we get “Dad?”

That’s where the biggest question is as it gets a little tricky. The entire time on Acapulco we see just how much Maximo has feelings for Julia. Based on this information, it’s hard to believe he would walk away from their relationship so cleanly that the two’s daughter would be surprised to see him one day. Time would have had passed without him in her life. The sense that he would miss out on that time between the two people you’d think he’d love the most. So is it possible that this daughter is not his and Julia’s?

There’s a huge opportunity here for a much larger story between he and Isabel. While we see their relationship in limited capacity, who’s to say there’s not more to it. Gabriela Milla was fantastic in season 2 of Acapulco and seeing her more in season 3 would be a treat. In his imagination of the future, we see an actress portraying an older version of Isabel. Could the show bring both actresses back to further the distance between Isabel and Maximo? It’s more likely that Isabel distanced herself from Maximo having seen the connection between he and Julia. To protect herself and possibly her daughter, then there’s plenty of reason he wouldn’t have built that strong relationship with his daughter.

This could be why he was so skeptical about returning to his old home. He’d feel tremendous guilt if he not only broke Isabel’s heart, but if a child was in the middle it would only magnify that. Maybe it is he and Julia’s daughter, but it’s hard to believe he’d ever have that disconnect. Maximo would have made the mistake of his life for this to be the case. Going into season 3, we can’t help but wonder how his relationships became so fractured.
