Adding the Joker to The Batman Movie is Too Soon
Rumor has it that Matt Reeves will be introducing another Joker in The Batman. While we can’t get enough of the Crown Prince of Crime, enough is enough already. At the end of the day, does no one know how to write villains anymore that we have to go back and keep re-hashing the one villain that everyone knows?
The Joker is beyond overkill at this point. If The Batman does in fact have his biggest foe featured in the film unless he includes Joaquin Phoenix or Jared Leto it’ll be the third actor in under five years. The only time we need to see that many Jokers will be in the upcoming Three Jokers comic by Geoff Johns.
Batman throughout history has so many different adversaries that it shouldn’t be that hard to create an onscreen adaptation to fit a narrative. Still to this day, Selina Kyle aka Catwoman has rarely been established as a long time storyline that she has in the comics. The Batman seems to be planned as a trilogy so her’s and Bruce’s story might play out through three movies, but if the Joker is the endgame then the film is already predictable.

On the flip side of things, if the DCEU or whatever you want to call it now ever wants to be a true powerhouse, they need to borrow actual stories from the comics. Marvel’s MCU took the Infinity Saga and stretched it out over a decade of movies. We don’t need just another Batman story to relate to. With that being said, some of the strongest stories to come from the comics have revolved around the Joker and his mental torture of Bruce Wayne as well as the rest of the Bat-family.
When its all said and done, the Joker is the strongest card the studio can play, but its not the only one. Why is it that there have been so many great characters to never be seen on the big screen. Maybe this story is too early in the Batman arc, but to this day we’ve still never seen a big-screen adaptation of Nightwing who is an obvious fan favorite. Why can’t these movies work towards a Damian Wayne story arc? DC has been holding firm with its female counterparts Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn. Why can’t they venture down the road of Kate Kane or Barbara Gordon?
There are so many strong characters throughout the Batman mythos that continuously relying on the Joker to carry your films will again hold the studio back from being the blockbuster powerhouse they want it to be. Unless they open the books on some of their better characters, Batman will always seem like Sony’s handling of Spider-man, retreading every few years just to keep the character on people’s minds.
