MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. - "Episode701” (ABC/Mitch Haaseth) CHLOE BENNET, CLARK GREGG, HENRY SIMMONS, JEFF WARD

Episode two of Marvel’s Agents of Shield kicked off the season-long story arc we’ve needed. If you’re not caught up end here.

Going back in time, the Shield agents are faced with the ultimate dilemma.

“With the identity of the timeline-unraveling “threat” revealed, the team’s mission to protect him at all costs leads each agent to question their own values.”

Season seven brings about the ultimate tie-in to the MCU. The big reveal in episode two, Jemma finds out just what they’re there to protect. To save Shield they have to save Hydra and now we know why. Apparently, there was a specific reason to going all the way back to 1931 The events of the past are unfolding into the super-soldier serum eventually gave Captain America his powers.

As with all-time travel media, if they change the past they return to a future that won’t be the same. Despite wanting to save lives, what happens if they do could be much more catastrophic.

As the window closes on a time jump, the stage wouldn’t be set for future storylines without a little drama. The team takes off leaving one of their own behind. Enoch of course was left behind as he’s the most likely to survive decades of change.

In a 13-episode shortened things are coming along at a much faster pace than usual. Not only are we seeing the full circle of what we know will later involve Steve Rodgers becoming Captain America, but we’re also seeing Agents of Shield come full circle and setting up the development Shield itself. Of course, Enoch will either take the information he has and be involved in setting up the events of the past, or he’ll ensure that everything comes together as it originally unfolded.

But how does his absence lead to what will become Shield in the future? More importantly, how does Fitz play into everything that’s going on here? He’s suspiciously missing from this season so far, and they’ve been very vague on his character altogether.

Is he in the past? Is he in the future? Is he the catalyst that brings Hydra together having been tied to them in previous seasons? Will he be the one that prevents the destruction of what will become Shield? His story obviously will be the biggest arc or reveal this season, otherwise, it wouldn’t be so secretive.
