Agents of Shield: The Long Awaited Revival

Agents of Shield

Marvel’s Agents of Shield has had a rocky history. Year in and year out, the show has whispers of cancelation and each year it lives to fight another day. With a huge fandom, ABC keeps reviving the show season after season and every season seems to pay off. With the last three seasons alone, the show seems like it’s pushing the limits of where in wants to go.

But what if it was part of their plan all along? Could the show come full circle?

Rewind the tape all the way back to 2008 to Iron Man’s post-credit scene. Nick Fury sitting in a dimly lit Stark mansion approaches Tony Stark who questions who he is. “Nick Fury, director of Shield. I’m here to talk to you about the Avenger Initiative”. Since the Avengers movie, Shield has faded into the background of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, focusing more on our heroes on the big screen. That, however, doesn’t mean they no longer existed.

In the comics, Shield works with our heroes and can be spotted on the pages of many of your favorite Marvel comics. But, through great writing, the show goes into detail why they’ve faded from existence. Was a reset in the works all along? Agents of Shield had just enough of a fan following to keep it from the cancellation ax but a bigger picture might have been keeping it alive. Between Captain Marvel and Avengers: Endgame, two big films are coming back-to-back to the MCU both could be a Shield-centric storyline. True, Captain Marvel being set in the ’90s will ultimately serve as a prequel to the current MCU but at some point, during Endgame we’ll have to visit what we’ve lost. Our heroes will have to find a way to bring back their fallen comrades. If the shows and MCU are intertwined, just how far back will this reset go and will it affect Agents of Shield?

With season 5 being written as of it was the last, who knows just what kept the show on life support. Although, oddly enough, post-Captain Marvel and Endgame, Agents of Shield has been already picked up for a seventh season. The timing seems a bit ironic. Why would a network renew a show for two more seasons after whispers of cancelation for 3 seasons in a row? Was the cancelation rumors far fetched and hearsay, or was the studio trucking along for the overall continuity? The show never really limped towards a finish line and seemed to be growing stronger. Did the studio finally have faith in the writing staff to tie in future stories to what we’re seeing unfold in the MCU? I guess we’ll wait and see in July.
