All American Homecoming: Don’t Turn Thea Into That Girl
Over the course of the run for All American: Homecoming, character development has been pretty good. While the show was initially centered around Simone and Damon, others have begun to take more of the spotlight. One, in particular, is Thea mays. However, just as fast as she became likable, the writers are now fixated on turning her into “that” girl.
What I mean by “that’ girl is the one that each show has that viewers love to hate.
When All American: Homecoming began, Thea was the nasty girl. She and Simone didn’t get along, she was aloof from everyone, and just had an agenda that we didn’t understand at first. All she knew and cared about was tennis. But as the show progressed, Thea eventually would become part of the crew, and then she fell in love with Damon. Those ice walls that were up were now beginning to melt, and viewers began to let her in. But that wouldn’t last too long.
Season 2 should have been her real coming-out party but nooooo, they had to reel her back into “that” girl. Thea got hurt, blamed Simone, and then began to take her frustrations out on Damon. They made up but then the very next episode, she was back to being “ice queen” again. How can the writers have her serenade Damon and then the following week, break it off with him as if he was never here for her? It’s too confusing trying to keep up with her arc. It’s as if they have no idea what to do with her.
Thea Mays has a backstory that viewers have yet to embrace. We can’t embrace it fully because it hasn’t been shown to us. What drove her to come to Bringston University? We know she wants to be considered the best but having her use steroids, come on, that’s a bit of a reach.
The bomb scare was supposed to bring everyone together but what it did was force Thea to go back into her shell. She’s a great character with much to offer but the writers are doing her an injustice.
