All American: Season 3 Is All About The Bond Of Friendships For Spencer James
Every show has its turning point regarding the storylines. For All American, it’s been the first five episodes of Season 3 that have given the show new life off the football field. In the first two seasons, the main storyline has focused on Spencer James and his adjustments to playing football in a new environment. But this season, the writers have taken a deeper look into his relationships that make up the show.
With Spencer returning to Crenshaw for his senior year, that caused a slight rift between him and Jordan Baker. For most of the first five episodes, the two didn’t speak. Besides Dillion, Jordan was the only other person that Spencer looked to as a real brother. Their bond was broken and neither knew how to fix it.
Down in Crenshaw, Coach Baker asked Spencer who the better QB was for the team and Spencer went with Darnell over his childhood friend Chris. From that decision, Chris believed that Spencer didn’t have his back. However, the issue went much deeper than that. During the State Championship Game in Season 2, Spencer put a hit on Chris that almost left him paralyzed. Chris admitted that it was hard for him to be on the same field as Spencer knowing what happened between the two.

On the other side of the coin is the relationship between Spencer and Olivia. The writers are hinting at the fact that something may have happened sexually between the two over the summer. But five episodes in and the fans are still waiting. It’s time for them to get their act together as their dynamic in the first two seasons is what made the show great. But now, it’s like they’re on opposites side of the battlefield and it’s taking their storyline in a weird direction.
Then we get down to the meat of the problem. Spencer James and Coop. They have been there for each other since childhood but Spencer is now realizing that he can no longer play Superman to Coop’s Lois Lane. Finally admitting to himself that Coop is his stop point, Spencer had to decide what to do with that revelation. Does he tell Coop or keep dealing with the stress of the situation?
With Corey’s death in Season 2, that storyline may have been the best writing done on All American. It took the focus off the football field and shed some light on what the characters were going through emotionally. It seems that Season 3 has picked up right from that point and turned this show into a real drama.
