Animal Kingdom: Season 6 Proves Why Killing Off Smurf Was A Mistake

Animal Kingdom

When it happened, I totally understood why. It was time for the Cody boys to grow up. Smurf would always be a reminder that they needed looking after and her death, while shocking was needed at the time. However, Season 6 of Animal Kingdom has shown just how important she was to the grand scheme of things. Her sons and nephew need her more than ever now.

Season 6 is the finale of this great show and of course, the writers are going to send the boys out with a bang. All the robberies, fights, and murders will lead up to a breaking point in which there will be no return. With Smurf dead, the leadership has changed hands at least 3 times. Pope grabbed the mantle but J and even Deran felt they have equal rights to take over that role.

The issue is, that nothing has really been settled. Business is moving but they’re taking risks that should not be taken. Their last jewelry heist job was a success but even parts of that failed as they didn’t get the last diamonds they wanted. Under Smurf’s guidance, that job would have gone off without a hitch.

Money is flowing but the boys are making mistake after mistake. This is where Smurf would have set some ground rules.

As Animal Kingdom continues to flashback to a younger Smurf, Julia, Pope, and Baz, we see how Smurf manipulated every one of them and kept them in line. Yes, we know that Baz gets Julia pregnant but what happened following that we have yet to see. We’re pretty sure Smurf was the reason J never knew that baz was his father until it was too late. We need that old Smurf back and we need her now.

The boys are heading for a train wreck if they don’t get their heads into the game. Craig is off doing side jobs with guys he doesn’t know and now that Ren is back in his life, he’s back to using again. Deran has shown signs of maturity but he’s the emotional one of them all. He can’t be trusted to lead anything. J has what it takes but the problem he faces is that he’s overly cocky. Pope is not a leader. He has his moments but following Pope is like walking into a burning building with gasoline drawers on.

Keeping Smurf alive would have everything settled. Yes, there will be some cracks in the foundation but Smurf’s main goal was the success of the family. She did some over-the-top things but her intentions were always to win. This is what the boys are lacking.
