Apple Needs to Swing Big and Attempt to Buy DC/DC Comics
Today’s media landscape is in ever state of change. More and more networks are scrambling to merge and provide content for the streaming wars. The digital content of course is the way of the future and of course Apple wants to be a part of that future.
Having already changed the way people listen to music, Apple has been trying for some time now to reinvent the way we receive all other forms of media as well. Apple TV+ is attempting to change movies and television. Apple Arcade is trying to provide new ways to play on the go. Both Apple News and Apple Books has been chipping away at the way we read.
However, for now, they’re seemingly sitting in neutral when it comes to digital content. They’re not failing but they’re not really knocking it out of the park. Apple is sitting on a stockpile of cash and can afford to throw money at the wall to see what sticks. Is it time for the tech company to gamble on something big like DC/DC Comics?

One of the biggest success stories in media for the past few years was Disney’s purchase of both Marvel Studios and Lucas Films. Spending just over $8 billion dollars in the past 11 years to acquire content in every aspect of media has paid off for the House of Mouse. Is it time for Apple to take a similar gamble?
When it comes to content, Apple purchasing DC/DC Comics would open the flood gates for their first real blockbuster media move. Apple would get their entire catalog of comics for its Books app. They’d get their entire collection of movies and shows to bring to their Apple TV+ service. Owning the rights could transition comic themed games to be exclusive in their Arcade.
Of course, Warner Bro’s and AT&T would have to want to sell but with physical comics in a constant state of challenge who knows. Combine that with how much the DCEU is struggling to find footing in the Marvel dominated world. Even as we speak, Marvel is gearing up for a major console gaming release with Avengers and there’s not much announced for DC.
AT&T has more than enough content that losing DC related content might not hurt their up-and-coming HBO Max. However, the rights to Batman alone is probably one property they don’t want to let slip away.
Apple needs a big swing in the media world. DC and DC Comics would provide the content needed to make their mark and Apple has the fanbase to revive them the way Disney did Marvel. If Apple was serious about making it in the digital content world, it’s time to back the Brinks truck up to the AT&T HQ.
