Are The Green Bay Packers Still Receiver Shopping?
The Green Bay Packers have always searched for players to compliment Aaron Rodgers and why should this offseason be any different? With the Packers receivers seemingly nursing injuries annually, getting additional help here may be a smart move. However, they will need to be creative and cheap here as their salary cap situation is one of the worst in the NFL.
One name they could go after is former Philadelphia Eagles receiver Nelson Agholor. During their Super Bowl run in 2017, Agholor stepped his game up and even transferred that success to the 2018 season. But then 2019 hit and Agholor proved to be fools gold as he forgot everything there was about being a receiver.
Maybe what he needs is a change of scenery. Playing with Rodgers in a pass-heavy offense could get him back on track. Plus, he will be a cheap option here. With his continuous drops, the Packers should get Agholor on a bargain deal.
Last season, the Packers finished the year ranked 17th in passing yards and 14th in receiving touchdowns. Even with Rodgers leading the way, the Packers have room for improvement. In 12 games, Davante Adams still managed to lead the Packers in receiving with 83 receptions for 997 yards.
More Packers: No, Aaron Rodgers isn’t The G.O.A.T.
His next closest partner was Marquez Valdes-Scantling with 35 receptions for 456 yards. Rodgers will need more production from his receivers for the 2020 season and Agholor could fit that bill. Adding Agholor will give the Packers a trio of receivers who should be able to move to chains and provide space for the ground game.
However, there are still issues. Adams must stay healthy and Valdes-Scantling must put in that offseason work to learn to create better space between him and the defensive backs. Then you have the unsure hands of Agholor. The only reason Agholor makes this list is due to his contract.
There is no way the Packers can afford a top-tier receiver. While he does have his issues, Agholor can learn from Adams and Rodgers. Agholor’s best season came in 2017 when he caught 62 passes for 768 and eight touchdowns. There could be an explosion coming for Agholor in 2020.
