Arizona Cardinals Have A Few Scapegoats

Former Arizona Cardinals HC Kliff Kingsbury

Now that the NFL regular season is over, it’s time for the annual finger-pointing. Teams that fell short of expectations start their firing processes and usually one, if not many, are handed their pink slips often referred to around the league as Black Monday. The Arizona Cardinals weren’t excused from the process as they excused their head coach Kliff Kingsbury and their GM Steve Keim stepped down.

The Cardinals are will be back on the hunt for a new coach just shy of a year of extending Kingsburry. Oddly enough, he’s not the biggest problem in the organization. Actually, the biggest problem is the organization. In the Super Bowl era, you’d have to assume the team with the worst percentage of wins would be a team like the Jets, Browns, or even the Detroit Lions, but it’s the Arizona Cardinals. While they’ve had their winning seasons, there’s barely a hint of consistency following such seasons.

Te organization can point the finger at Kingsbury all they want, but there was way more at play this season. First, DeAndre Hopkins was suspended for PEDs the first 6 games of the season. Kyler Murray was injured to finish the last three games of season. Nine games this year the Cards were without their top WR and their franchise quarterback. Its no surprise the team struggled with consistency on offense.

Then, of course, there’s the GM Steve Keim. Point the fingers at Keim, but the Cardinals weren’t short on big moves. Aj Green might not be the WR he once was but he played his part in Arizona. The Cardinals struggled with playmakers until they went out and made the move for Hopkins. Kyler Murray may be inconsistent but if they didn’t sign him to his long-term deal, fans might have lost their minds.

Blame who you want but the Arizona Cardinals continue to be the definition of inconsistent. In their 100 years as an organization they’ve never kept a coach longer than six seasons. It’s as if every time they fall short, the leash on quarterbacks, head coaches, or anyone within arms reach becomes shorter. Maybe Arizona thinks they can sway former Saints coach Sean Payton to sign but that’s still not a guarantee. No matter how bad they were this year, it’s only going to get worse now that they’re starting over, again.
