Arizona Cardinals: Should Drafting A QB Be On The Table?

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray

Let’s be clear, Kyler Murray isn’t going anywhere when it comes to the Arizona Cardinals. However, after a tough loss against the New England Patriots, they’d suffer another huge loss. Murray is said to have torn his ACL. Barring a setback, Kyler will be out 9-12 months after an ACL injury. The worst part about it is, who is to say he’ll ever be the same again?

Plenty of players have bounced back from an ACL injury. Adrian Peterson changed the thought process of these tears returning just as good as he was before. On the other side of the coin, Robert Griffen III returned but never was the same as a QB. If all goes well, 9 months would be the start of the season in September missing all of camp and preseason. Starters rarely work in the preseason as it is, but they still have to develop chemistry with incoming talent and be able to move in real-time. The Cardinals can still make a splash in the draft and pick up a playmaker to surround Murray but they’ll have to slowly progress chemistry as Kyler recovers.

So could the Arizona Cardinals go after a quarterback in the early rounds of the NFL Draft? They more than likely won’t but they should. It only stands to reason that Murray has had an up-and-down career in Arizona. He’s been a spark at times, but he’s also struggled mightily. One of the strengths of his game is his ability to make something out of nothing. Getting out of trouble when the defense is closing in is why he can make so many big plays out of broken ones. Will he be able to move and evade in the same fashion when he returns?

Even if Kyler can return to form, Arizona needs an insurance policy. There’s no guarantee he’ll be explosive enough to get them through the playoffs even at 100%. Kyler is a talent that’s for sure, but he needs to get to that next level. Maybe the threat of a talented QB in the draft can push his competitive nature to the brink of something awesome. The Arizona Cardinals not only need Kyler Murray back, but they need him to reach past his potential into his raw talent. He’s got another level but this side of him needs to be brought out and the only way to do it might be with a QB competition.
