Batman Characters Who Could Use A Fresh Take – Mr. Freeze

When it comes to DC and the DCEU there have been plenty of failures amidst their limited success. Their main problem has been finding the perfect mix of authenticity on classic characters while taking a modern approach. Fans have loved Gal Gadot in her Wonder Woman role as it stayed true to the comic book representation. At the same time, they’ve also embraced changes to characters such as Jason Momoa’s Aquaman and Paul Dano’s Riddler. With the “new DC” arriving with the James Gunn/Peter Safran regime there are plenty of opportunities to get a new take on some old characters such as Victor Fries – Mr. Freeze.

More Entertainment: Batman Is More Complex Than Given Credit For

With Matt Reeves’ The Batman, fans were finally treated to a Batman movie where the main villain wasn’t just the Joker, Bane, or the Penguin. All the way back in 1997 Arnold Schwarzenegger was the live-action version of Mr. Freeze and we’re about due. Reeves has had success with the latest Batman movie and Gunn will surely bring talent he’s met along the way as he builds his cinematic universe. One name that should absolutely be tapped for that role is Dave Bautista of Guardians of the Galaxy fame.

While he’s expressed interest in shifting away from superhero roles and into expanding his range as an actor, Freeze would be a different role. Drax was loud, boisterous, and sarcastic which allowed Bautista to show off his comedy chops. Freeze is the opposite style of character. He’s quiet, intelligent, and reserved while still remaining intimidatingly intense.

Bautista himself would pivot away from the traditional Mr. Freeze we’ve seen throughout Batman history. Yes, Arnold Schwarzenegger has the size and physique, but most other iterations were portrayed in the average build. Not only would Bautista bring back the size that Arnold brought to the character, he’d also bring change. Jason Momoa brought a fresh take to Arthur Curry with a modern tatted-up version. Bautista could bring the same as Freese, allowing him to switch up his range while still filling a blockbuster-sized role on the big screen. There’s an emotional element to Victor Fries as he tries to save the life of his dying wife that goes beyond just a campy comic book character like Drax. The tone of a Batman movie is different from the family-friendly GotG but the actor would have to be willing to take the role. Whatever the case may be, there’s plenty of opportunity to bring these characters to old and new audiences alike.
