Bel Air: What Season 2 Needs To Show More Of

Bel-Air - Season 1

Bel-Air might have flown under the radar unless you’re a die-hard streamer who’s big into their shows. Fans of the original Fresh Prince either flocked to it or ignored it, feeling like it would be nothing like the original series. In a way, it isn’t but is. It is more of a drama-driven show than a comedy, but that only strengthens the appeal. With more human emotion on display, it emphasizes the acting ability of newcomer Jabari Banks. Peacock renewed Bel-Air for a season 2, which is great for viewers because there are still plenty of stories to follow up on:

Will & His Father

The strongest story of both the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and the new Bel-Air was the relationship between Will and his dad or lack thereof. Season 2 has the opportunity to revisit this emotional battle for Will that they couldn’t have done in the 90s. Lou was absent from Will’s life up until he moved in with his family and then left as he always did, leaving Will feeling empty. Audiences were brought into their relationship much sooner and while Lou left again, it was more of an explosive situation due to years of pent-up aggression.

Marlon Wayans absolutely shined in this role and I don’t think anyone who watched it would be disappointed if they kept his character popping up. Whether it was trying to have a relationship with his son, or Will overcoming the struggles of their relationship and succeeding in spite of him there’s a foundation for more powerful scenes between Banks and Wayans.

More Bel-Air: Carlton Came Out On Top Of Season 1

Geoffrey

Is anyone else not okay with Geoffrey no longer working for the Banks? His relationship with Will was at times the backbone of the 90s sitcom. Two outsiders in the Banks household who bonded over feeling like they never really fit in. Bring that back in Bel-Air. It’s clear that Geoffrey sees himself a bit in Will which is how he got himself into that predicament. Phil may choose to swallow his pride after ending his campaign to focus on family, or Will might have to push him to realize that Geoffrey is just as much a part of the family as he is. No part of this show feels right without his story in there.

Will’s Next Move

Season 1 ended with Jazz by Will’s side asking him who he wants to be. His larger-than-life personality and ability to fill a room demand attention in any situation. With the right head on his shoulders, it’s his crown to wear. So what will his next move be? Does he carve out his place at high school? Will he break the social barriers of being an outcast? Will he be the guide that gets Carlton back on track after he helped him in the end? There are so many “next moves” to show the world is at his fingertips he just needs to stretch out a little more to take it.

Did He Blow It With Lisa

No way this story goes away that quickly. The two bonded from the start and teenagers can’t stay mad forever. What would it take to make her forgive Will? How does he take the one thing he’s truly connected to and fix his mistakes? What happens to make her forgive him? Does he win her back with his charm or is there an incident that makes her scared of losing him?

Bel-Air took a chance when it created a reboot and it stuck the landing. The cast and crew have created the rare reboot that shines on its own rather than in the shadow of its predecessor. What are you looking forward to in season 2?
