Bianca Andreescu Is The New Star Of Women’s Tennis

Bianca Andreescu

It’s hard not to like Bianca Andreescu. The 19-year-old is the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. Seeing as she’s so young, this should be the first in a long line of titles for the Ontario native. Can she be the next great Women’s tennis star?

Knocking off Serena Williams is hard enough. Andreescu defeated her in straight sets. That’s pretty impressive, especially given her record in Grand Slam events. Before this US Open run, Andreescu was a combined 2-2 at the other Majors (Australian, French, Wimbledon). This also includes a second round withdrawal at the 2019 French Open due to injury.

Before her US Open win, Andreescu was ranked 14th by the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association). That was, at the time, her highest ranking. As of September 9th, she’s ranked 5th. Truly, she’s taken the jump into one of the best female tennis stars in the game. And Bianca Andreescu has the support of the Canadian people as well.

Fans in Canada have embraced the countries first Grand Slam champion. The popular Toronto Raptors battle slogan, “We The North” has been replaced by, “She the North.” It’s a big moment for tennis in Canada. The country has found success with others such as Genie Bouchard and Milos Raonic, but never on the level of Bianca Andreescu.

Confidence played a big factor in the US Open win by Bianca Andreescu. She spoke about this during a quote given by Yahoo Sports.

“I don’t think I’ve lost a match since March, so my confidence is skyrocketing right now. I just don’t want to take anything for granted because there’s going to be weeks where you’re going to lose, so right now I’m just on cloud nine and hopefully I can just keep the momentum going.”

Andreescu has had quite the 2019. She went 34-4, securing two other titles in the process. This included a shoulder injury, which kept her out of action for a few months.

Argue this if you want, the run by Bianca Andreescu at the US Open was one for the record books. Nobody thought she’d win the whole thing. Not with Serena and a motivated Simona Halep in the field. Yet, here we are, as there’s a new top star in the women’s tennis game. And she’s not going away that easily.
