Binge-Worthy or Cringeworthy: Space Force – Netflix
Netflix was hoping that Space Force would be its next big comedy. With the success of The Office before it, the hope was that the same cult following would follow the Steve Carell lead show over to Netflix. Critics aren’t 100% sold on the show but to be fair, its a story we’ve heard before.
From Netflix:
“Four-star general Mark Naird —leader of the newly created Space Force — is pressured to launch a satellite despite dire warnings from scientists.”
Throwing back all the way to 2005, there was a little known Greg Daniels show called The Office that received mixed reviews. That show would go on to be one of the most popular comedies to hit network television and is beloved and quoted daily by hardcore fans. The same thing can be said for Parks and Recreation which was intended to be a spinoff to The Office but they couldn’t get the formula right and would eventually be about a small-town Parks department.

Fast forward to 2020 and the Netflix show. Critics jumped all over the new comedy for not being the fun energetic show they expected. But anyone who’s seen Big Daddy knows “critics can be cynical a—holes.” Space Force not be on the level of Carell’s past performances and be nowhere near The Office, but there’s no need to write it off just yet. There is a ton of talented cast and now that their chemistry is established, season 2 might be much funnier if you stick it out.
If you judge Space Force on the first half of the season, yes I would classify it as a very cringe-worthy show. However, once the plot progressed and characters connected there were moments of humor. The pace of the show is still a little slow and stale by the end of the season, but there are moments where you look towards the future storylines and humor in the show. Netflix might not have an instant hit on their hands, but if you judge Space Force as a whole, it falls just inside the binge-worthy category.
