While the future of the DCEU seemingly up in the air based on fan and critic backlash. Multiple franchises were to be spun off from the universe Zach Snyder was creating, but after he was let go by Warner Bros. the future of these films were in doubt. Instead, the studio responsible for these DC based properties decided to go with a more stand alone approach to their movies.
Luckily for fans, Shazam was considered a success by both the fans and the studio. With a modest budget and a respectable box office haul, the future of Black Adam was finally drawn in with pen. Of course, how could they not with how successful Johnson has been in both family, comedy, and action films. His box office numbers are always through the roof. Now that DC seems to have their act together producing success after success with films like Wonder Woman, Shazam, and even now Joker. The studio has removed the black eye and moved on to more thought out less rushed projects.
Original plans for The Rock was to have his character Black Adam be part of the Shazam film. After the ideas started flowing, it would be decided that Black Adam needed his own origin story or Shazam would’ve had to have been a much longer film. Being as it was more of a family-friendly and lighter DC project, getting a younger audience to sit through it might’ve been a challenge.
Now we know that next year should be when the movie finally starts to take shape. Black Adam has alway been a villain so we probably won’t see the usual light-hearted and charming version of Dwayne Johnson we’re accustomed to. However, he’ll bring a lot more experience acting with him than his days as The Tooth Fairy. After the success of Shazam left us wanting more, we hope Black Adam doesn’t take another 10 years to hit theaters.
