Black Widow: The Whistle That Should’ve Happened
The much-hyped standalone MCU film for Natasha Romanoff aka Black Widow finally hit theaters and Disney+ Friday. For fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was either well worth the wait or an utter disappointment. Actions scenes and heartfelt moments aside, Marvel had a chance to change the entire landscape of the MCU forever.
There’s no secret that Black Widow sacrificed her life in Avengers: Endgame for the greater good, but what if? Since the last Avengers film, fans have wondered if Black Widow would somehow make a return to the MCU.
With Marvel and their ability to alter timelines and reality with shows such as WandaVison and now Loki, there was a chance they could catch the audience off-guard with something as innocent as a whistle.
In a touching yet subtle moment between sisters Natasha and Yelena, Marvel set the stage for an epic comeback of sorts. The whistle between the sisters at the end of their epic battle at the Red Room could have been a bit of foreshadowing.

With Yelena visiting Natasha’s grave in the post-credit scene, Yelena did her part of the whistle and for a brief moment, viewers held their breath just waiting for Natasha to give her answer to that whistle. What made the scene move nerve-wracking was the fact that the camera panned back almost teasing fans that it may come. But it never did. And rightfully so. Natasha is dead. But what if?
What they could have done is still give that whistle response then fade to black. That would have sent everyone in a frenzy whether you’re at home or at the theater. Could you imagine the dialogue between fans if that whistle would have happened then flashed right back to the ending credits leaving everyone to wonder what was next?
Another option they could have gone in typical Marvel fashion would have been to have the whistle happen but then have Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ (Contessa Valentina) character show up as she did. Instead of blowing her nose, she could have come on screen right after the whistle. Fans would still be left wondering. Did it come from Natasha or Contessa?
No one wanted to see Black Widow killed off but giving her a solo film after her death was not fair for fans of the Avengers from Phase 1 to the ending of Phase 3.
With Wanda doing alternate realities and Loki finding the key to the timeline, this should’ve been the perfect opportunity to right a terrible wrong.
One whistle was all it would have taken. Just one whistle.
