Buffalo Bills: Preseason Gameplan Revealed In Week 1

Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills

After having arguably one of their best seasons in recent memory but it’s easy to understand what their preseason focus will be. After playing the Detroit Lions in their first preseason game with limited starters not a lot was on the line. After all, preseason is just here to work on evaluating your weaknesses so you can fix them before the season.

One of the lone weak spots for the Bills last season was their run game. While they were explosive on offense, it was primarily in the passing game. If Buffalo would like to take advantage of mismatches they’ll have to balance out the run game. Gone are the days of LeSean McCoy running all over, and that’s not a bad thing. With no disrespect to Shady, it’s becoming a passing league and the Bills are taking full advantage of it.

In their first win in the preseason the Bills have shown up with one goal in mind, see what works in the run game. If it was only about winning, Buffalo could’ve easily put their backup Mitch Trubisky in the game and excelled with the offense they already had in place last year. However, that was not the case. Trubisky would throw just two passes and it would be up to their backups after that. While their offense was pretty balanced, being down in the fourth quarter they aired it out a little more.

For the most part, the Bills would give a lot of opportunities for their running backs to prove what they can do. Leading the way was Devin Singletary with 8 carries for 42 yards. With Zack Moss out it was the perfect chance to step up and the Bills took a long look at their running backs. Matt Breida didn’t make an impact with 10 carries for 27 yards. From there no other running back would make an impact although Davis Webb would run twice for 26 yards.

Speaking of Davis Webb, he would primarily get the bulk of the work while Jake Fromm would close the game. Both will be fighting for rosters spots but with Trubisky penciled in as the backup, they’re both a long shot. Obviously, none of them will be taking over for Josh Allen so to make an impact and earn a spot, they’ll have to show not only command of the offense but also productivity and tempo. The ability to speed up the game whether it’s in the run or passing game is where they need to make their impact.

Going forward, expect the Buffalo Bills to continue more of the same. The Bills need to prove they can effectively run the football as well. They won’t need to rely on it, but beating teams like the Chiefs will come with controlling the ground game and the clock. You can expect to see a lot of focus on the rush in the remaining two preseason games.
