With the offense stalling much of last year, the Miami Dolphins are looking for a whole new direction. With new-again offensive coordinator, Chan Gailey taking the reigns there will be a new look. His first task at hand? Fixing the run game.

When speaking of Gailey, coach Flores indicated that one of the top reasons for the hire was having coached against him and creatively trying to find success against his offenses.

Looking at a Chan Gailey run offense, each piece plays off the other so well, so his first task will be fixing the run game to open up the offense to being less one dimensional. Since the Dolphins picked up running back Jordan Howard in the offseason, one key piece is in place.

More Miami Dolphins: Should the Dolphins Trade Up in This Year’s Draft?

Howard has rushed 1,000 yards a couple of times as well hovered around 10 touchdowns per season. Last season Miami managed just 10 rushing touchdowns the entire season. The run game was almost nonexistent last year and wasn’t close to 1,000 yards.

While Howard might be the lead rusher this year, the Dolphins could still pick a running back in this year’s draft. Howard is still recovering from a shoulder injury from last season. Even though he’s claiming to be 100% recovered, it would be wise of the team to take precautions and find a quality back up to take the pressure off for the entire season.

The Dolphins got the best out of their players and took home some much-needed wins with limited talent. Throwing a player like Howard in to spark the offense could help all positions. Kalen Ballage struggled behind an offensive line that struggled as well.

In Gailey’s offense, Howard will provide better field vision which will slow offensive struggles. Hitting an early hole and getting to the next level will take the pressure off trying to hold blocks for too long. Also, the Dolphins receiving unit took aggressive leaps forward last year. Howard will add yardage out of the backfield in the passing game forcing defenses to cheat forward as well.

The offseason and draft haven’t even completed and the Miami Dolphins might have already added their most important piece. Jordan Howard wasn’t overpriced and his two-year deal is a low gamble. If he can spark what Miami needs to score, it will be worth the payout.
