Can Young Rock Be NBC’s Next Big Comedy?

Dwayne Johnson in Young Rock

NBC is pairing up with the “most electrifying man in sports and entertainment”, again. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson already has a partnership with NBC with his hit tv show Titan Games. Johnson hosts the strength competition pivoted in the latest season to get more professional athletes on it and draw in more crowds. Now they’re teaming up to bring viewers an inside look at one of the most universally loved entertainers in the business.

From NBC’s Television Critics Association :

“We’re going to find Young Rock, for example, wreaking havoc in the streets of Hawaii when I was a very young teenager, getting arrested seemingly every single week, doing a lot of things I shouldn’t have been doing. Still a good kid. Then from there of course we were evicted off the island and forced to leave the island and move to of all places Nashville, TN where again I continued to get in trouble. Then we go into my high school years and then onto Young Rock as a University of Miami football star if you will until I got beat out of my position by a guy by the name of Warren Sapp who just happened to go on to become one of the greatest defensive tackles of all time.”

If ever there was a larger-than-life celebrity that fans want to see more of, it’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. From his early days in the WWE to his early family-friendly movies, and his comedies and action films of today he succeeds time and time again. When you take someone who seems to have the “Midas touch” and drive to succeed, fans are always going to take an interest.

So what can we expect out of the new NBC show soon to be a fan favorite? Young Rock will be executive produced by Nanatchka Khan and Jeff Chiang. The duo already has the coming of age sitcom Fresh Off the Boat on ABC. With that being said Young Rock will pivot from that traditional mold and instead of following a linear timeline, will jump all over spanning multiple ages in Johnson’s life.

Johnson himself has been cast to narrate the show but the Rock is one of the busiest men alive. He’s got his movie career, his tequila, appearances, his recently purchased XFL, and now multiple television shows. If half the effort is put into Young Rock as the rest of his career, there’s no doubt it could be one of tv’s top shows. While there’s no date set for the premiere, it’s said to be released in early 2021.
