Carnival Cruise Lines is about to change the game. One of the world’s leaders in cruise ship vacations, the company has announced their new ship, Mardi Gras, will feature the world’s first on-ship roller coaster. You can expect it to bring in crowds of excited guests.
Carnival Cruise Lines is the largest cruise line company in the world. With over 12 ships, there’s a lot of variety. The new Mardi Gras will be an XL-class ship, and the first of two in the next 3 years. The coaster (known as Bolt) will be the selling point for their newest ship. What do we know about Bolt?

There are some Stateside projects you might be familiar with, though. A few include Hollywood Rip, Ride, Rockit at Universal Studios Orlando, and Laff Trak at Hersheypark.
Bolt will be the biggest, and most challenging, coaster Maurer has ever built. While small on the size scale, there’s a lot riding on this. Being the first cruise ship coaster, there will be a lot of skepticism about Bolt. It’s Maurer’s job to prove the critics wrong.
According to Carnival, the coaster will be able to run on sea days and port days. The cruise lines newest ships, Horizon and Vista, offer a “sky ride”, which isn’t the most reliable due to heavy winds. Although, Bolt will look to buck that trend. It has been designed to be a coaster at sea. Every measure will be taken to ensure safety and availability at peak times of the day.
Here’s something about Bolt that make it one of the more unique coasters in the world. You’re able to control your speed. This is almost unheard of on a coaster. In addition, there will be many twists, turns, and drops along the way. The cars will resemble that of motorcycles.
Christine Duffy, the president of Carnival Cruise Lines, spoke to USA Today about Bolt and Mardi Gras.
“It will be a thrill ride. We think it’s a really cool innovation for Mardi Gras, which will have a lot of new guest features and experiences that we have not done before.”
