Carolina Panthers: Could there be another reunion with DeAngelo Williams?

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed RB Knile Davis Monday, all but sealing the fate of DeAngelo Williams tenure with the team. What’s next for the 33-year old RB could be a return to the Carolina Panthers where he had his best seasons.

Why should this be a priority for either party?

The Panthers are betting their chips on the health of Jonathan Stewart again. While Stewart still has gas left in the tank his body is breaking down due to excessive carries. To put it simply, he has no help. There’s Cam Newton but the Panthers have not been able to lean on Fozzy Whittaker or Cameron Artis-Payne. The safe bet is that Carolina will look to draft a RB in the first round but if they can somehow come to terms with Williams they may have the luxury of waiting until the 3rd round and get a player.

Williams, in spot duty with the Pittsburgh Steelers the last two seasons has been wonderful despite an injury-riddled year in 2016. What he can offer the Panthers is a fan favorite, a reliable player, familiarity and best of all, experience. Could this be the return of ‘Double Trouble’?

Both Stewart and Williams formed one of the best duos in their time together as they each ran for 1000+ yards in 2009 as Williams (1117) and Stewart (1133) and combined for 18 total touchdowns that year. Time has passed but with both players splitting carries these last few years they should have one GREAT season left in them.

The Panthers seem to be on a reunion tour of sorts with the free agent signing of Julius Peppers this offseason. Bringing back Williams will give the Panther that old school feel the city has been dreaming for since he, Peppers and Steve Smith parted.

Williams will not draw a huge amount of offers from other teams and a return home would be perfect to extend his and Stewart’s careers. Newton, Williams, and Stewart back together again has a perfect ring to it.
