Carolina Panthers: Offensive Preview – Turning to a rookie for help
The Carolina Panthers made a bold move with selecting running back Christian McCaffrey with their first selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. While many figured they would go, Dalvin Cook, the Panthers took who they thought would be of better service. But will McCaffrey be enough to help the struggles of Cam Newton?
If the Panthers are to get back to their high-scoring ways, it all starts with Newton. 2016 was not Newton’s best year. To say he underachieved after such an amazing 2015 MVP campaign would be the understatement of the century. However, Newton is a professional and will look to bounce back even stronger than before.
With the addition of McCaffrey and veteran Jonathan Stewart, the Panthers will look to head back to the ground & pound days. But opponents must not forget the tandem of Greg Olsen and Kelvin Benjamin.
What may hurt the Carolina Panthers is their lack of depth at the receiver position. This was a position of needed interest that the front office did not address in the offseason. If Devin Funchess does not come into his own this season, then the air attack may be disrespected by opposing defenses.
The Panthers ranked 19th in the NFL in Yards per game but imagine how good they could be if Newton could connect on more than 53 percent of his passes. The offensive line has taken a few hits this offseason, especially the departure of Michael Oher and it will be an edge of your seat season for Panthers fans when it comes to watching Newton’s blindside.
With a new season brings new optimism and the Carolina Panthers will be looking to renew their position as one of the best offenses in the NFL. It will be a struggle but if the team from Charlotte, NC has their say—it will be well worth the fight.
