Chicago Bears: If Mitch Trubisky Fails This Season, Nick Foles Could Be The Savior

The Chicago Bears are expected to make a run for their division. Especially after the addition of Khalil Mack this past weekend. But how does that affect their quarterback situation? With Mitch Trubisky heading into his second season as the lead signal caller, the Bears are banking on him to lead the way. But what happens if he regresses this year? All hope is not lost, thanks to Nick Foles.

According to the hordes of Bears fans, they are ready to compete in 2018. The running game is led by Jordan Howard who rushed for 1122 yards and nine touchdowns last season. Backing him up will be Tarik Cohen who finished with 53 receptions out the backfield. Now that Trubisky has a true No. 1 receiver after the addition of Allen Robinson, there should be no more excuses.

In 2017, Trubisky passed for 2193 yards with seven touchdowns and seven interceptions in 12 starts. Not staggering numbers but just enough to secure his spot for another season. However, with names like Teddy Bridgewater, Foles, and possibly Tyrod Taylor set to hit the market next year, one has to wonder if this could be the deciding factor for Mitch’s future.

The reason this is an issue is due to the addition of Mack. The Bears are paying Mack a fortune to solidify their already top 10 defense. What if all they’re missing is that QB to put them over the top. The hottest name on the market will be Nick Foles.

What sets Foles apart from the others like Taylor and Bridgewater is that Foles has a Super Bowl ring. While the Philadelphia Eagles would have loved to move him during the offseason after his MVP performance against the New England Patriots, they just couldn’t afford to let him walk not knowing if Carson Wentz was 100 percent to begin the season or not.

It would appear they made the right call as it was announced that Foles will start Week 1 for the Eagles and that puts teams like the Bears in a tough spot. If Trubisky were to falter under the pressure, then that will leave the Bears looking for a new leader. But still, that doesn’t mean that the Bears may have to wait until this offseason to make a move on Nick Foles.

If Wentz comes back in the same MVP form he was before his injury and Mitch Trubisky is struggling before their Bye Week, it may force the Chicago Bears to call Howie Roseman and offer a second or third round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Now, this may be a big deal for them as they just gave up two first rounders in the Mack deal. Nonetheless, if their plan is to have a winning QB under center, then why risk selecting another wet-behind-the-ears rookie. Especially when a vet like Foles is there?

This will not be the first time a promising QB stumbled out the gate in the NFL. But the Bears are playing to challenge the Green Bay Packers and Minnesota Vikings for the division. They have everything else in place, but it will all come down to the growth of Trubisky.
