Chicago Bears: Offseason Panic Mode 2021 Edition

Mitch Trubisky

The Bears finished this season in typical Chicago Bear fashion, average at best. Nothing about the 2020 team resembled a Super Bowl contender and going back and forth between quarterbacks didn’t scream confidence in the team. If they can’t start making better decisions, they’ll be in panic mode sooner rather than later.

Moving On From Mitch?

Mitch Trubisky is an unrestricted free agent this year and if the Chicago Bears have their way, they’ll find a quick replacement. There have been rumors of they’ll be linked to Deshaun Watson should he become available, Russel Wilson, and even Alex Smith. Whatever the case may be, it seems like they only approach Mitch about returning should they whiff in free agency.

Chicago is ready to make a splash but the biggest names shouldn’t be their target. Giving up multiple firsts could hurt their future. They’d be wise to sniff around 35-year-old Matt Ryan in Atlanta. It would still take a bit to get him, but not quite as much as a 25-year-old elite QB.

Low Draft Pick

Despite making the playoffs, the Bears only finished 8-8. It was an ugly 8-8 with a wild card spot. With that being said it comes out as a glass half full/empty.  They made the playoffs, but fall all the way to 20th in the draft and miss out on top-level talent in skill positions. If they can’t get a free agent quarterback, they’ll need to trade up. Chicago is one of the teams that can either make a big splash or fall back in free agency. They can’t afford to have another average offseason.

Bring Back Punishing Defense

With strides being made in the rest of the division, the Bears have too many holes to fill on the offensive side of the football. If they want to avoid a complete rebuild, Chicago could focus on the defense and keep themselves in games without having a fantastic offense. Even if they get their big-name quarterback in the offseason, there are too many positions in need of an upgrade.

No More Playmakers On Offense

Allen Robinson is said to be out for a payday in 2021. Since his current team doesn’t have the cap space to invest in a big payday, Robinson might be on his way out. They could use the franchise tag on Robinson, but again they don’t have the money and want a big-name quarterback to fill the void. If Robinson walks the next big name on offense was Jimmy Graham and even he only produced just over 400 yards. Statistically, he was even the 4th best receiver on offense. Robinson outgained the number 2 and 3 receivers combined. They’ll need playmakers on top of QB.

The Chicago Bears have too many decisions to make this offseason to assume they’ll be competitive. Even if they make a splash there are too many holes to repeat a playoff spot.
