Chicago Fire: Matt and Sylvie Deserve The Perfect Ending
For any show that reaches 5+ seasons, there will be moments that fans will not like. Storylines will become less fan-friendly and more about survival. Main characters will come and go and this is what fans of Chicago Fire are dealing with regarding the departure of fan-favorite Matt Casey.
Casey and Sylvie Brett have gone through the most trials and tribulations as any characters on Chicago Fire and they never seem to come out on top. Yes, their professional lives are booming but their personal lives have been nothing but dark clouds.
From the start, it’s been horrible. Matt lost his best friend and fellow firefighter, Andy. He had a run-in with Hank Voight where his life was threatened. He lost his fiance Hallie in a fire. Married Gabby, lost a child then lost custody of Baby Louie. Then for the icing on the cake, he lost Gabby as she left the marriage to pursue personal goals.
But not to be outdone is the storyline for Sylvie.
A small-town woman who left behind a life of her own only to head to Chicago and deal with more heartache. Nothing has been easy for Sylvie either. She started a relationship with Cruz only to see that fail. She would then become involved with Antonio Dawson which led to nowhere. Her professional career has been a bit risky as Sylvie has had to deal with the discipline board a few times since arriving in Chicago.
But the one constant on Chicago Fire is love. Relationships have been the center of the show just as much as explosions and fires. Season 9 has seen no shortage of relationship arcs with Stella and Severide, Cruz and Chloe, Ritter and Eric, and Gallo and Violet. However, the one fans have been pawning for has been the union of Matt and Sylvie.

The writers have teased us over the last year or so. Hell, at one point they even tried to marry Sylvie off to the Chaplin. But when they had their chance, another fork was thrown in the road when the mention of Gabby came to play. Gabby has been out of the equation for some time now so the point of the writers to keep playing that card was useless.
Now here we are. Both parties have come to terms with their feelings and just when things were on the up and up for the couple, boom, more heartache. Matt has to move to Oregon. Since Jesse Spencer is leaving the show, the writers actually played it right by leaving their storyline open. Regardless of Spencer returning, there is still a possibility of fans seeing the two live happily ever after.
Chicago Fire is in its 10th season. That alone is a heck of a run for a scripted drama. Let’s say there is one more season left and Matt and Sylvie are still doing their long-distance thing. There’s a great chance that Sylvie could move to Oregon or Matt back to Chicago, or we can get a flash-forward to a possible wedding.
Matt Casey has been through enough to not deserve a happy ending. And the same goes for Sylvie Brett. It’s up to the writers to make sure they get their happy endings together.
