Chicago Fire: Why Is Matt Casey Always The Unlucky Guy in Love?

For the life of me, I’ve never come across a character as heartbroken as Matt Casey. On the season 6 finale of Chicago Fire, Matt and his wife Gabby Dawson had a huge argument about Gabby still wanting to give birth after the doctor informed her she could die. But Gabby being Gabby decided on her own she still wanted to go through with it. Did she consider what this meant for Matt? No.

After their heated debate, Gabby decided that going overseas to help the needy was what was in her best interest. Nevermind her marriage and her work, she did what was best for her. In the process, she put her marriage on hold with no concern of the damage it would do to Matt. But why Matt Casey? What has Matt done on Chicago Fire to warrant such heartache?

It began with his fiance Hallie. She was before Gabby but she died in a fire. While Casey mourned her death, we rooted for their demise because we wanted Matt and Gabby to be united. No one wanted Hallie dead, but we did want her to vanish out his life. There were some rough patches, fights, and breakups for Matt and Gabby to get their act together, but when they did, it was pure magic. Or so we thought.

Gabby and Matt had trouble getting pregnant so they decided to go the adoption route. The found a great kid in Louie but that ended in heartache as his biological father wanted custody. Although they put up a good fight and meant well, Matt and Gabby knew that giving Louie up was the best thing to do. But still, why so much pain for a couple trying to do right?

The issue with Gabby’s father played a role in a few arguments but our favorite couple fought through the stress and came out on top. But there was still that issue of having kids and Gabby was not going to give up. Knowing it will kill her, Matt tried his best to resist and Gabby gave up. Not giving up on the baby idea, but the marriage in general.

As we enter Season 7, Gabby and Matt were Face-Timing and sending texts and we wondered if that was the end. But, out the blue, we got a Matt and Gabby scene. Going forward, there will be no more speculation about their marriage as Gabby really decided on her future as she told Matt she was taking a permanent role over there.

Chicago Fire fans know about the contract situation but what hurts more is how Matt was done wrong in the process. With leaving the show, at least kill her off. I say that because the way she left just showed how selfish her character was. Now, with his marriage over, how is Matt Casey supposed to trust another woman?

Matt doesn’t deserve this. He’s one of the nice guys.
