For years, fans of Chicago PD have waited patiently for Kevin Atwater to get a proper storyline. Well, in most cases, a love connection. While he has indulged in things outside of the Intelligence Unit, Atwater is still that one character outside of Hank Voight who has yet to have a real relationship. Why is that?

There could be many factors but to say that there have not been opportunities would be a bald-faced lie. But here we are in Season 9 and finally, Atwater has a real shot at something. However, nothing is ever as it seems.

Atwater is now dating a social activist/art teacher named Celeste. While the pairing appears to be a storybook match, it’s far from that. What the writers of Chicago Pd had done, was take something small and made it bigger than what it should have.

What happened to boy meets girl, boy losses girl, then boy gets girl back and they ride off into the sunset? With Atwater, his first real romantic storyline is way more complicated than any of his Unit counterparts.

Jay Halstead and Erin had issues but their main concern was hiding it from Vought. Ruzek and Kim were set to be married until Ruzek got cold feet. Halstead and Upton’s romance rose up the ranks quickly and now they’re married. But lost in the shuffle has been Atwater.

Celeste seems like a great catch but their union is built on a lie. For the rest of the cast, their relationships are built on the job. So why give Atwater the one relationship outside of the job? And to make matters worse, why give him one with a person who does not believe in the justice system? I mean geez, he’s a cop right, and a black one at that.

As good as Chicago PD is, one would think that the writers would have the dynamic of relationships under control by now.

Atwater had less drama in his life then the other cops in the Unit. He has raised his two siblings alone and he’s one of the good guys. And yet, he can’t catch a break in the love department while the others are just trading women and men left and right.

Although he finally confessed to Celeste, that was just the tip of the iceberg. There is more to this story than just admitting who he is. Celeste still has no idea how Atwater came into her life and when she finds out he was one of the black cops in the car with Lewis when he was killed. How will they go over with her?

Just maybe she will forgive him but will she ever trust him again? This is where the real problem lies. From the start, the writers could have made this simple, instead, they added more layers to the situation.

It apperas that Atwater may end Season 9 with more troubles then he began with. He lost both parents. Had to move his siblings away, been harrased by other officers, and now he was forced to lie to a women he cares for. When will the writers give Kevin Atwater the respect he deserves?
