Cleveland Browns: Did Josh Gordon Sucker Them Into A Trade?
What the hell was John Dorsey of the Cleveland Browns thinking Monday afternoon when he agreed to send receiver Josh Gordon to the New England Patriots for a 5th round pick? I get it, Gordon wore out his welcome in Cleveland but why send him to one of the best teams in the NFL and the best team in the AFC? What exactly was the point of that? You mean to tell me that the Patriots offered the best deal for Gordon? I don’t believe that.
Even with his off-the-field problems, Gordon is worth at least a 3rd round pick.
[MarkAds]The mistake the Browns made was leaking the information that they were releasing Gordon Monday. What this did was lower the price. Teams knew, either way, he was gone. All they had to do was wait until Monday. What this did was allow a team like the Patriots to low ball the Browns, but at the same time, the Browns shot themselves in the foot by being too desperate.
There was no reason they couldn’t hold on to Gordon. Make him sit a few games while quietly shopping him around.. Gordon is no Corey Coleman, he would be worth more to the Browns just sitting, now he’s off to a team in need of a receiver with his skills and one fresh off back-to-back Super Bowls. Not to mention, possibly the greatest QB ever. Remember the last time Tom Brady was teamed up with a reciver of Gordon’s skills. Yes, Randy Moss.
The Cleveland Browns jumped off the cliff a little too fast when teams like the Philadelphia Eagles, San Fransisco 49ers, and Jacksonville Jaguars could’ve used Josh Gordon plus given them more than what the Patriots did. So why? What made their 5th round pick so appealing?
What happens if Josh Gordon suddenly gets his act together and pulls off a Moss-like year? While all the talk of Gordon not having his mind and heart on football has dominated the rumor mills, just maybe, Gordon was tired of the losing and needed a change of scenery. There were reportrs that his preferred destination were the Dallas Cowboys and the 49ers so that right there shows that his mind frame is still on football. He maybe just wanted out of Cleveland.
Think about that. Gordon has done everything possible to have the Cleveland Browns cut him over the years but they have stayed loyal. His plan all along may have been to force their hand. Now, Gordon looks like the genius while the Browns are short on receivers and he’s heading to a powerhouse.
