Cleveland Browns: If Tua Becomes Available, Browns Should Jump
The talk of the Miami Dolphins moving on from Tua Tagovailoa has persisted even after the team stuck with him in 2021. The rumors still persist that the team could move on from the second-year quarterback and if they do, the Cleveland Browns should be in attack mode should they decide to move on from Baker Mayfield.
Despite his struggles in Miami, there’s more problems outside of the young quarterback the team needs to address. Before his complete fall apart against the Tennessee Titans, Tagovailoa was the most accurate passing QB in the NFL. He’s going through his progressions, making plays that he should make, and taking care of the football. It’s more on the Miami Dolphins organization for his struggles than his own doing.
But the Dolphins struggles are exactly why Tua Tagovailoa would succeed with the Cleveland Browns. First and foremost, Cleveland has an actual run game. Despite the injuries, the Browns had 3 able-bodied running backs who were productive in 2021. There’s no better complement to an RPO offense and RPO quarterback than an actual run game. Defenses actually have to believe the quarterback is going to give the ball to someone who can pound it down their throats. The entire RPO offense is built around deception and taking advantage of mismatches and reads.

That doesn’t happen in Miami. For whatever reason, the Dolphins never improved their run game and thought an RPO would work. Which leads to Tua’s next struggle, a piss-poor offensive line. Tagovailoa doesn’t exactly have the best arm strength but is as accurate as they come. He might not throw a lot of pretty go routes but he can put the ball exactly where his receivers need it to be on short, mid, and long throws. As long as he can make smart, heads up, clock managing decisions those throws will work just fine over the bombs.
But Tagovailoa doesn’t have the time to make those throws in Miami. The Dolphins have been working on fixing their line fore years but can’t seem to figure it out. On the other hand, the Cleveland Browns have a very good offensive line. If Tua had more time in the pocket, his decision making is on point. If Miami is giving up on him because they can’t fix their struggles than that’s on them. He might not have a cannon, but he can make drive-changing plays when not constantly under pressure. Again, something that could be greatly improved by a strong run attack.
With both Baker Mayfield and Tua Tagovailoa needing to get to the next level, it’ll be interesting to see how the offseason goes for both the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns.
