Cobra Kai: Bringing Ali Back Complicates Things More

Cobra Kai

Say what you want regarding Netflix, but one thing they can do is bring a show to life that may have faltered or been ignored elsewhere. Shows such as Lucifer and Designated Survivor have been met with new viewers which Netflix is partially responsible for. Their new attraction is Cobra Kai. The once YouTube Red hit is now streaming its first two seasons on the streaming giant.

For fans of the original Karate Kid franchise, Cobra Kai is a breath of fresh air. While it still touches on the dynamic between Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence, there are new factors in place that balance out the storyline. However, two important faces are missing. The first is Mr. Miyagi and the other is Ali Mills.

Ali was the girl caught in the middle of Daniel and Johnny’s beef. While the Daniel and Ali relationship didn’t last, Ali, much like Johnny faded off into the sunset in Part 2 and 3. But now, with a reboot and two seasons under its belt, Cobra Kai is ready to get the band back together.

In the first two seasons, her name was dropped numerous times as well as countless flashbacks between Daniel and Johnny. Then, with Johnny joining Facebook, he reached out to Ali and accidentally sent a message to her. In the Season 2 finale, Ali sent Johnny a friend request with the phone sitting in the sand.

Does this mean that she’s heading for either a recurring role or a starring role in Season 3? Fans of the show have speculated that Ali and Karate Kid 2 villain Chozen are set to make an appearance in Season 3.

But what does Ali’s presence means going forward?

There are plenty of moving parts as Cobra Kai heads into season 3. What will happen with Miguel? Where did Robby go? Will Daniel still have a marriage? What will John Kreese do with Cobra Kai? Will Johnny and Daniel team up to take down Cobra Kai? And now you possibly add Ali to the mix and it may just be too much.

Johnny still holds a candle for Ali. But in a sense so does Daniel for whatever reason. Ali dumped Johnny for Daniel then left Daniel for some other guy. So why would any of these guys be willing to give her another shot if they’re both so hung up on the past?

If she does make it to Season 3, that’s another storyline in itself to go along with the others. Karate Kid fans would love to see her but her presence could easily take away from the great story they’re building without her. Does Johnny need a love interest? Yes. He did have one for all of one episode with Miguel’s mother but the writers quickly put that to bed.

With Johnny looking to change his ways and possibly accept a truce with Daniel, why throw Ali into the mix and further push that chance out of the way? Ali would be good for an episode or two but if she comes in-between Daniel and Johnny, again, it could destroy the show.
