Dallas Cowboys: Enough with the Mediocrity

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett

The never ending saga that is the tenure of Jason Garrett continues in Dallas. While they have had their good seasons, the team has greatly underperformed underperformed in terms of expectations. Given the talent that the Dallas Cowboys have, the team should be an 11-13 win team every year. Fans might point to playing in a tough division as to why they’ll never consistently be above 10 wins.

Jason Garrett took over as head coach in 2011 and its been a rocky road at best. While the NFC East is a tough division, you only play division games 6 out of 16 per year and in that time the division hasn’t been that strong. The New York Giants were a 10 win team just once. The Washington Redskins haven’t been much better reaching 10 wins just once as well. The Philadelphia Eagles have been the best of the bunch winning the Super Bowl hitting the 10 win plateau 3 times.

The Dallas Cowboys under Garrett are just barely better than 8-8 each season with just a .565 win %. First it was Tony Romo’s fault because apparently he couldn’t win the big game. Romo was the greatest quarterback since Troy Aikman for the Cowboys and never truly won over the fan base. Now the team is loaded with just as much talent, if not more, and can’t fair much better than 6-5. But chances are they’ll limp to 10 wins this season and win the division out of pure luck.

Even then, Cowboys fans shouldn’t get their hopes up. Just making it to the playoffs isn’t good enough. When they’ve made the playoffs Garrett hasn’t faired much better winning just 2 of their 5 games. There’s a reason Dallas isn’t running away with the division or make it deep in the playoffs and that falls squarely on Garrett. Good coaches find a way to win it done when the games matter.

Blame the injuries or the lack of talent, but every team that has won the Super Bowl ever has had injuries and holes in positions to be exposed. When you strip down the Dallas Cowboys the fact of the matter is, Jason Garrett can’t win the big games. The Cowboys have been impressive at points this season but leading the division, who have they beat?

Owner Jerry Jones seems to finally sound like he’s starting to point the blame towards his coaching staff but Garrett still might be safe. Cowboys fans have to be frustrated with the “almost seasons” since 2011. If the team wants to get over the hump, they need to find a coach who can win the big games, and Jason Garrett ain’t it.
