Dave Joerger Needs To Remain As Sacramento Kings Head Coach For The Forseeable Future

Dave Joerger

There’s no scenario where the Sacramento Kings should dismiss head coach, Dave Joerger. The idea seems absurd considering the team’s 2018-19 record. Yet, there are fans that believe he’s running on borrowed time. These thoughts need to be put to bed. Joerger isn’t going anywhere if the Kings have anything to say about it.

It’s hard to believe anyone would want Dave Joerger gone. He’s coached Sacramento to a complete 180 turnaround. General Manager, Vlade Divac, has given him the players to win. Joerger has done an exceptional job coaching them.

There was a time the Sacramento Kings were the laughing stock of the NBA. During the 3 years prior to Joerger, the Kings had records of 28-54 (2013-14), 29-53 (2014-15), 33-49(2015-16). It took him three years to produce a winner on the court. Joerger went 32-50(2016-17), 27-55(2017-18) his first two years, but, has Sacramento fighting for a playoff spot in 2018-19.

It would be a disservice to let Joerger go. He’s signed through the 2019-20 season. The Sacramento Kings need to sign him to an extension. There’s a growing belief that Joerger would leave the team after next season, or even this upcoming off-season, to join his hometown, Minnesota Timberwolves. Divac can’t let that happen.

A lot of Sacramento faithful would love to see Dave Joerger head to Minnesota. There’s a growing minority that believes his rotations and coaching methods aren’t what’s best for the roster. He’s yet to consistently start Marvin Bagley III (who’s currently out with injury) and doesn’t understand Bogdan Bogdanovic is best used off the bench. There was also the odd on-the-court chastising of Buddy Hield.

These issues shouldn’t define Joerger’s current tenure. He’s a damn good coach. A lot of analysts and basketball minds had the Kings finishing near last in the Western Conference this season. Most of the Kings success can be attributed to the coaching of Joerger. He’s in the running for Coach of the Year.

When the Sacramento Kings traded away DeMarcus Cousins, the team was left for dead. Dave Joerger made sure that losing mentality was going to change. There’s a bright future ahead for Sacramento. Dave Joerger has gotten the Kings this far, and he needs to continue the push towards a title. In no way can the Sacramento front office let Joerger leave the Capital City. He’s just been too damn good.
