DC: Is It Time To Pivot From Batman And Superman?
With the world getting back to normal, hopefully, there will be a flock back to theaters. Superheroes were all the rage and with the pandemic shutting things down it gives studios more time to plan their return. Marvel seems to keep hitting home runs while DC keeps pushing mixed results. With the success of their other properties, is it time for Warner Bros. To pivot from their two biggest properties?
So far, every movie where Batman and Superman have been on screen has been mixed reviews. Despite Zack Snyder finally getting his version of Justice League, everything before never really knocked it out of the park. The ones that did, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam didn’t feature the two heavyweights. The biggest problem with that? Too many of the best stories are centered around their universe?
Without Batman, you wouldn’t have Joker, Riddler, Harley Quinn, and anything in Gotham. Without Superman, you’re missing out on Lois Lane, Lex Luther, or Brainiac. The two biggest heroes from the comics also carry the best stories.

However, there’s more to love than just Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne. So far, DC has hit one out of the park with Harley Quinn proving there’s more to Gotham than just Batman. Unfortunately for fans, they’re playing it too safe. Why haven’t they come up with a world or future where they’ve introduced the comic canon romantic relationship between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy? If Ivy does get introduced, do we really need another back and forth with her and Bruce Wayne to be done to death? They’re not running with it because the studio isn’t creative enough to make that kind of story work.
Then there are the sidekicks. Why haven’t they developed a world with Dick Greyson, Jason Todd, or Damian Wayne? At the very best, we’ve only ever got Robin who was just an early iteration of Dick Greyson. They don’t want to go down the road of side characters because they know it takes the focus off their franchises. But right now, they’re succeeding in sequels with Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Shazam. Not Batman, Superman, or Justice League.
There are even rumors that when they get back to it, that they’re pivoting Superman with a new casting choice and that choice would be a person of color. Is that where we are in the studios’ thought process? They can’t focus on any of the lesser-known comic characters and getting a person of color to play those roles. Nope, we have to rehash a character who has been done over and over again and watch that fail too.
Warner Bros. is clearly out of touch with what audiences want and will continue to shoehorn these characters across our movie screens. Until they learn their lesson, I guess its just Batman iteration 10.0.
