DC: The One Area They’re Outshining the MCU

DC’s Wonder Woman

When it comes to cinematic universes, Marvel has DC stomped into the dirt. The MCU has made more money and turned out more box office successes and shows no signs of slowing down. However, there’s one area where DC seems to have Marvel’s number, heroines.

Both Marvel and DC have put out their stand-alone movies in the superhero genre. Marvel had the team up with Black Widow in Avengers and a solo movie with Captain Marvel. On the other side of the coin, DC has had Wonder Woman in both stand-alone and team up, Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad, and now Harley Quinn in Birds of Prey.

Avengers has been the peak of superhero movies, but it took far too long to get a Black Widow to stand alone. Captain Marvel made a boatload of money, but rode the coattails of the MCU and was met with mixed reviews, even her role in Endgame was minor at best. Brie Larson is a hell of a talent and for her movie to get mixed reviews, the studio might have to throw more cards on the table.

Now when it comes to DC, Wonder Woman was the turning point for Warner Bros. While Justice League did, in fact, come after Wonder Woman, the movie was already in the process of being reworked. Even as Black Widow is set to debut her solo film this year, Wonder Woman’s sequel, Wonder Woman: 1984 is only a month behind.

Then, of course, there’s everyone’s favorite anti-heroine, Harley Quinn. Despite Suicide Squad’s shortcomings at the box office, Margot Robbie as Harley was one of the bright spots of the film. Fans reacted so positively to her character, DC has been trying to find ways to work her in and eventually landed on Birds of Prey, as opposed to Gotham Sirens.

True, Black Widow has far more screen time under her belt than her DC counterparts, her role throughout the films has been secondary at best. Both Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn were thrust into the spotlight for DC. If Marvel wants to catch up, they’ll have to make Black Widow and Captain Marvel way more likable. But to be fair, Marvel probably doesn’t care who comes to the table first, as long as the money keeps piling in.
