DC presents the Batman

Warner Bros. & DC put out a minor teaser for their upcoming 2022 schedule. On that schedule, there’s a small list of titles they have coming out. It’s not strange for a movie studio to put out multiple blockbusters a year, but 4 from the same universe might be tough. With the Aquaman sequel, Black Adam, The Flash, , and The Batman their plate will be full but will fans be tapping out.

The Batman – March

This one has the luxury of kicking the year off for WB and DC. The Batman starring Robert Pattinson ought to be the most talked about. There are always going to be comparisons to the last series and Batman has had its share of hits and misses. Luckily for fans, however, this one won’t be going back to the origin story. The Batman will focus on the Year One. Instead of going all the way back to his origin, this will focus on a year into his crime-fighting days. It has a large cast attached to it and director Matt Reeves promises a different type of Batman move so this might be a breath of fresh air.

Black Adam – July

Another film that will get the benefit of the doubt out of DC. Is there anything Dwayne Johnson touches that doesn’t blow up past expectations? There are not many people built like a real-life superhero and Dwayne Johnson is one of them. Put all that aside and we’re getting a story we rarely get to see in a film. Black Adam was the other half of the Shazam puzzle but the two stories grew too big to fit into one feature-length film so they split it into two. With Johnson attached and the success of Shazam, this one ought to gain a little traction in theaters.

The Flash – November

This one is a toss-up. While many have liked Ezra Miller as the Flash, how long before the character is overdone. There’s the television series is about to air its eighth season next month. They’re using a storyline we’ve seen in multiple ways. The Flashpoint Paradox is now a movie, a comic book, and was even used slightly for the Flash television show. Then we got both versions of the Justice League character when WB and DC decided to release the Snyder Cut. There are so many questions hanging around this movie, they better do a ton of marketing to get people excited. If they let it go with the limited promotions we’ve seen so far, it might not be as lucky as the others.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom – December

While the first version of DC’s Aquaman had huge success, just how much can this movie survive after sitting on the back burner to the other films. DC and WB must not be worried about “superhero fatigue” as this rounds out the tail-end of their year. They might get the holiday rush, but if they didn’t come up with something that hits harder than the first Aquaman, this one might also be in trouble. Sequels rarely do as well as the first and to drag it out until the end of the year after these other runs might scare a few audiences off.

Hopefully, DC hits on at least two of these major properties. They’re making a huge gamble rolling them all out so quickly. Sure covid might have slowed production, but this will be hard to swallow by year’s end. Will it pay off?
