DC’s The Batman: Are We Getting A Different Kind Of Batman

DC’s The Batman

When Matt Reeves was announced to take over the upcoming Dc movie The Batman, I’ll admit I was a little apprehensive. The latest Planet of the Apes was still fresh in my mind and I remember being a little bit underwhelmed at times. Not that it was a bad movie, just there were a few key parts that rubbed me the wrong way. Now that the trailer for The Batman is out, it’s a whole different feeling.

With the DCEU shifting focus to stand-alone movies and Ben Affleck backing out, temporarily the wheels were in motion for a new Batman film. Having been giving a blank slate, Reeves decided yet again to go back to the younger days of Bruce Wayne. However, instead of telling an origin story we’ve all seen done to death it looks like we’re going back to a different origin of Batman, the detective. After all, DC does stand for Detective Comics and we could very well throwback to the early days of the caped crusader.

Reeves has said many times he wanted a more Noir version of Batman and exploring this side of the often forgotten staple we might get a Batman tale unlike what we’ve seen in recent memory. Am I the only one who got a little bit of a Saw vibe in the early scenes of the trailer? Something about the way they were investigating the crime scene just reminded me of the dark and twisted mind of the Jigsaw killer, something we might see out of one of the main villains, The Riddler.

More Batman – Creating the Perfect Batman

We’ve seen the billionaire/playboy in the adult Bruce Wayne, but it looks like we’re getting the younger less experienced, Batman. This version of Batman might still have the fresh wounds of his parents still carved in his brain, forcing him to act of impulse as the anger for what is happening in Gotham grows. The Batman is supposed to take place right around Bruce’s year two of being the Caped Crusader so will it explore where he stands on his “no killing” policy die-hard fans demand is in there.

Clearly, the brutal beat down of a would-be attacker still shows the darker and pained side of Bruce Wayne.

The downside of The Batman so far is yet again, we won’t get a live-action of the other Bat-family team. No Nightwing, no Damian Wayne, and no Jason Todd. Some of the best storylines from the comics and still we’re not getting the live action version. So the detective aspect might bring a new twist to the character on screen, but it appears the same Bruce Wayne centered story it always has been.
