Denver Broncos: Can They Bounce Back After Off Year?

Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson

The Denver Broncos had one of the worst seasons in the team’s history. While it might not be their worst win total, the dysfunction was on full display for the entire NFL and its fans. Russell Wilson was supposed to be the highlight of this season and his play was the exact opposite. Sideline arguments seemed like a weekly activity and while they walked away with some wins, they were not the team they were supposed to be.

The Broncos might have a long way back from this debacle but they’re not dead yet. Rumor has it that former Super Bowl head coach Sean Payton will be meeting with the team soon about their vacant job. If Denver can land a big-name coach who knows how to reign in star power, he might be able to get Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos back on track. Wilson might be level-headed but the rest of the team was full of fire.

It was quite clear the Broncos lacked focus, direction, and discipline. We all know Russell Wilson can ball but has the rest of the NFL finally caught up with him? A lot more of this younger generation has a similar style to the former Super Bowl-winning QB. His skills didn’t seem like they’d diminished, but the confidence has for sure. This whole season he was out there playing like he never wanted to leave Seattle. Was he carrying the weight of no longer being wanted in a Seahawk uniform? Did the constant criticism on social media and on sports talk show finally catch up as well? Either way, this wasn’t the same Wilson that elevated his game week in and week out behind a patchwork line in Seattle.

Now to get back on track, the Denver Broncos need to go all in on Sean Payton. He’s the no-nonsense guy with an old-school mentality that toughness wins down the stretch. He’s also the same guy who has years under his belt with one of the better quarterbacks in his generation Drew Brees. With both their time in New Orleans, Brees and Payton had their off years, but what would follow soon after was another playoff run the following season. Payton is the guy who can focus the team to block out all the noise and have a bounce-back year but will the Broncos do enough to bring him in?
