Denver Broncos: Does Russell Wilson Make The Broncos Contenders?

New Denver Broncos QB Russell Wilson

The Denver Broncos made the move of the offseason and acquired Russell Wilson via trade. The Broncos were in desperate need of a quarterback and Russell Wilson was rumored to want out. Both sides needed a big shakeup and it seems they got it. But can Wilson be the guy who leads the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl?

First, we all know Russell Wilson is a winner and can make it to and win a Super Bowl. But he’ll be in the AFC now and it will challenge him to step his game up as a competitor. The Kansas City Chiefs have been dominating the conference lately. The Buffalo Bills have been teetering on the edge of greatness and should get over the hump soon. The Cincinnati Bengals proved they’re going to be tough. Those are just the teams that dominated and not even the ones that are competitive. Denver hasn’t been a force to reckon with in a few seasons and it might get worse before it gets better.

This brings up the next point. Denver might have hit a home run with a winner like Wilson, but they’ll need to hit free agency a little harder to provide him with the help he needs to succeed. One of the reasons he struggled as a member of the Seattle Seahawks was the weak play of their offensive line. While Denver might not have been as bad, they’re not exactly near the top when it comes to their offensive line rankings.

Then of course they will need to make moves for a couple more playmakers. They were able to spread the ball around when it comes to receiving by none of their playmakers topped 800 yards this year. Granted Russell Wilson will be slinging it a bit more than Teddy Bridgewater or Drew Locke, but adding another explosive receiver wouldn’t hurt. That or a tight end who can get off the line and block downfield sure would make the case with a scrambling quarterback.

While Russell Wilson is a huge upgrade for the Denver Broncos, they’ll need time to let the soon-to-be 33 year old find his rhythm. It shouldn’t be hard for him to come in and make an immediate impact, but it’s on the Broncos to invest in his success. They gave a lot in return to get a Super Bowl champion but they need to learn from the Seahawks’ mistakes and not expect him to do it all. Denver wins this deal, but they can’t coast the rest of the offseason. They need to be aggressive and go after top-level talent still. Denver needed to make this move to keep up with the AFC West and now they might actually succeed.
