Detective Pikachu Hit The Target As A Great Summer Blockbuster

Detective Pikachu

Detective Pikachu did the Pokemon name proud. In terms of Nintendo films, it’s better than the 1992 Super Mario Brothers film. Although, who am I kidding, this might be the best video game film of all-time. That’s no joke. Detective Pikachu hit the mark on so many levels.

You might be thinking, how does this live-action Pokemon stack up against the cartoon versions? Let’s get one thing straight, the Pokemon look outstanding. The CGI made them appear real. The lifelike design was one of the film’s best features.

How about the story? Detective Pikachu doesn’t follow the same arc as the video games. This is a new and original film. For what it’s worth, this might have been a better story than what we are used to with Pokemon. Instead of trainers, humans and Pokemon work together. There is still a poke battle scene but doesn’t fit the same narrative as the video games and animation.

You’ll be introduced to the film’s main antagonist, Mewtwo, rather early. It’s fitting to see one of the strongest Pokemon the main villain in the inaugural film of this series. Just be warned, the film does have a few tricks up its sleeve. Things might not be what they intend to be.

Ryan Reynolds uses the same charm that won fans over as Deadpool. Don’t worry, though, he’s about as PG as you can get. Imagine if Deadpool was PG, that’s the kind of image they portrayed on Pikachu. It works rather well, as there are some really funny moments.
The supporting Pokemon also made their presence known. Psyduck was one of the cutest things you’ll ever see. However, the standout Pokemon was Mr. Mime. Detective Pikachu took a real comedic turn with him featured. There’s also a great scene with Cubone in the beginning.

Detective Pikachu has a real family appeal to it. Kids and parents will love this. When trailers first released, there was a thought this could be a PG-13 film. As mentioned before, Reynolds excels (surprisingly) in making this a tame movie. There are definitely some edgy moments. In addition, some rather frightening scenes, though, nothing to be too alarmed about.

It’s possible Detective Pikachu spawns a sequel. The film has made some decent money. If that’s the case, the same style used in the first would do really well for a second installment in this world. Even if you don’t like Pokemon, Detective Pikachu needs to be seen. It’s a good old fashioned time at the theaters.
