Dexter: New Blood – Can It Live Up To The Original?

Showtime's Dexter New Blood

Dexter was one of the bigger hits from Showtime when it aired 15 years ago. The hit series followed the life of the title character Dexter Morgan and his balance between a normal life and the life of a serial killer.

From Showtime:

He’s smart, he’s good looking, and he’s got a great sense of humor. He’s Dexter Morgan, everyone’s favorite serial killer. As a Miami forensics expert, he spends his days solving crimes, and nights committing them. But Dexter lives by a strict code of honor that is both his saving grace and lifelong burden. Torn between his deadly compulsion and his desire for true happiness, Dexter is a man in profound conflict with the world and himself. Golden Globe winner Michael C. Hall stars in the hit SHOWTIME Original Series.

More Entertainment: Wu-Tang Saga Needs At Least 2 More Seasons

The one thing that everyone wants to know is just how much the new iteration of Dexter will live up to the original. The first episode airs today/tonight depending on if you have the Showtime app. Titled Dexter: New Blood, it picks up well after the season 8 finale. The tone is different and there are differences for sure. Right off the bat, there’s no catchy theme or narration at least on the first episode, but it has the usual feel of a typical episode.

You have to wonder if the differences are meant to distance the show from the original ending which most was not satisfied with.

From Dexter: New Blood

Set 10 years after Dexter went missing in the eye of Hurricane Laura, the series finds him living under an assumed name in the small town of Iron Lake, New York. Dexter may be embracing his new life, but in the wake of unexpected events in this close-knit community, his Dark Passenger beckons.

Without ruining the initial viewing for you Dexter: New Blood has just enough intrigue that gives viewers exactly what they want, more to the story they grew to love. Some familiar faces appear in episode one “Cold Snap” but it sets itself apart just enough. If you enjoyed the original, at least through episode one you’ll be entertained enough to want to come back. There’s already plenty of unanswered questions we can’t wait for answers to. No matter how it ends, we already want more.
