Entertainment: The Simpsons Are Set to Remove Apu
The Simpsons are the longest weekly cartoon that still airs on TV. Over the years they have introduced the world to the characters of Springfield. Some of them include the Comic Book Guy, Mr. Burns, and Krusty the Clown to name a few. One of the characters introduced was Apu. He first made his debut back in 1990. On the show, Apu is the owner of the Kwik-E-Mart. In addition, he is known for the line, “Thank You, come again.” While Apu has been entertaining us for over twenty-five years, it seems that Simpson writers are going to be taking him off TV.
The reason for why Apu will be taking off TV is another example of why we are becoming such a PC type of culture. It seems that there are some people who find the character of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon to be too much of a stereotype of Indians. Yes, but I don’t think Matt Goering and company created Apu to piss off Indians.
I understand why they are removing him, I just don’t agree with the idea. The Simpsons are trying to stay on the good side of the political correctness line. Apu is meant to be a satirical person. I don’t understand how a show like South Park has been able to stay on with how much they aren’t politically correct.
I put the Simpsons removing Apu on the same level as the Washington Redskins team name debate. Both have been around for a long time. It’s only now that people are “offended.” Personally, it’s stupid that we have gotten to this point in our society. I have said this before and I stick to it, PC has changed our society around for the bad. However, the Apu character is funny and enjoyable. I just wonder how long until Family Guy or South Park need to get rid of a character because it’s too much of a stereotype.
