Fox: Is it Time For A New Girl Spinoff?
It’s been just over two years since the quirky series New Girl ended on Fox. Lasting seven seasons it may have been time for each of the actors to move on. However, with network television turning to the familiar and streaming services doubling down to bring in target audiences, there’s a chance to bring back the popular show in a new spinoff.
From Google:
“After going through a rough breakup, awkward and upbeat Jess (Zooey Deschanel) moves in with three single guys. Intelligent and witty Nick is an underachiever who took the bartender off-ramp on his road to success. Schmidt obsesses over his social standing and looks at Jess as a personal project. Winston is a competitive former athlete who, after realizing he will never become a pro, moves into the loft. Together with Jess’ best friend, Cece, they bond to form an unlikely, and dysfunctional, family.”
When we last left the show, the characters were at a point of moving on with their lives. The show had run its course and there was little meat left on the bone to continue their crazy antics. But there’s always a void when it comes to hit comedies and most sitcoms don’t make it out of their first season. To top it off, most spinoffs don’t hit the same mark as the original.

When it comes to those sitcoms, they often try to capture the same magic as the original and just end up a carbon copy of something we’ve seen before. Luckily for New Girl fans they wouldn’t have to run into that situation. Yes Nick, Jess, Winston, Schmidt, CeCe, and Coach have moved on but not in a way that they’re out of each other’s lives.
Imagine a spinoff with one of the show’s longest running couples Schmidt and CeCe. Towards the end of the show, the two were wed and became parents. It wouldn’t be hard to write a show with the two struggling to move from a big city loft life and parenting in the suburbs. Lovable Goofball Schmidt struggling as a parent would be a riot to continue.
Yes, Max Greenfield has moved on to a similar sitcom (The Neighborhood) over on CBS, but the dynamic of that show presents a different path than continuing with the success of New Girl. Not only would you get familiar faces back on screen, but a few guest spots from the old cast could bump interest in the show.

Maybe they bring back Jess (Zoey Deschanel) in a small capacity to play a young Ruth’s elementary teacher. While rushing off to soccer or dance practice, Schmidt gets pulled over by Winston (Lamorne Morris) or Aly (Nasim Pedrad) for speeding.
While it might be hard for New Girl to return after Disney acquired the rights to most of Fox Studios properties, they also own Hulu which would be a great landing spot for the series. Bringing back old shows is so hit or miss, but with people staying in more familiar faces give the comfort with old favorites. Waiting a few years after the show went off the air gives the perfect amount of time for the Schmidt family to grow. The showrunners even at one time made this very pitch. It’s time Fox revisits everyone’s favorite quirky comedy.
