Green Bay Packers: Did They Overspend On Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers

Earlier this week the Green Bay Packers finally caved to the demands of Aaron Rodgers. The team went out of their way to throw money at one of the best quarterbacks in the game but some are left scratching their heads. What happened to his frustration with the team? What happened to the team’s unwillingness to pay him? Both sides put up this big front like there was a hard line in the sand but in the end, Rodgers ended up with a 4-year/$200 mil contract. $50 mil/ year for a quarterback is a high bar, but did they overpay?

There’s no secret to success, you pay the guys who can get you there. But when you look at Aaron Rodgers as a talent, he’s a guy who can get you there but just can’t seem to get them to the Super Bowl. With Drew Brees and Tom Brady finally calling it a career, Rodgers is one of the few elite quarterbacks left in the NFL. He’s the old fashion gunslinger who can throw bombs and make big play after big play. Unfortunately for the Green Bay Packers, he can’t seem to shake the post-season losses. Yes, he is one of the greatest to ever play for Green Bay and yes he is one of the greatest of his generation, but stats don’t win games.

If he’s not winning it all, Aaron Rodgers provides the Packers with one thing, other than stats. Rodgers gives them a stall. He might not win another Super Bowl in Green Bay and to them, it might be okay. However, if he continues on this path, at least it gives the Packers more time to find a replacement for the aging star. Remember when GB replaced Favre? The team had no problem pulling the plug on their franchise QB back then because they already had their guy on the roster. Unfortunately for the current state of the Packers, there’s not a guy who can come in and be just as productive.

Aaron Rodgers strong-armed his way into a new contract because the Green Bay Packers had no other option. He could’ve gone anywhere and had the bank truck backed right up for him. Why did he have to put on the theatrics?

If it was about money all along, then he could’ve gone elsewhere and got it. If it’s about the direction of the team, he could’ve gone elsewhere and got a better supporting cast. No matter how you look at it, this whole ordeal was a joke. The whole thing was trotted out despite in the end knowing Rodgers was going nowhere. The Green Bay Packers didn’t offer a 4/$200 mil contract to bring back someone they thought was going to win them a Super Bowl. They spent $200 million knowing more fans would come out in that time frame hoping they’d be competitive than if they were rebuilding.
