Grey’s Anatomy: Why Is Owen Always The Odd Man Out?

Grey's Anatomy

In November, Grey’s Anatomy will begin its 17th season. What has kept the ABC medical drama relevant in today’s revolving door of shows has been their ability to connect with not only their core audience but the reality of situations. From births to death all the way to complications within relationships, Grey’s Anatomy has never pulled any punches. However, there are some characters who just can’t seem to catch a break. Next in line is Owen Hunt.

The issue surrounding Hunt’s character entering the 17th season of Grey’s Anatomy is his union with Teddy Altman. For years, Owen and Teddy have played the role of best friends. They have both been there through the other’s pain and yet both have denied or either hid their true feelings for one another. When they finally did decide to make a run at it, Teddy shut Owen down as she felt his heart was still trapped between her and his ex-wife Amelia.

Owen, for all his true romantic ways, has never had the best of luck when it comes to romance onscreen. His time with Christina Yang was just a mirage as both knew they weren’t as compatible as they made it appear. Owen wanted a family but Yang wanted a career. From the start, their relationship was doomed. But they proceeded on and the end result was Christina leaving not only the marriage but the hospital and country.

The failed marriage with Yang forced Hunt to jump around for a while until Amelia Shepherd came into the picture. What a whirlwind romance that was but the same issues kept arising. Owen wanted a family and Amelia, at the time did not. It was great but quickly became toxic. They did manage to adopt and try the family life but Amelia still wanted out. Amelia eventually gave in to the aspect of family life but it was too late for her and Owen.

But it’s always more to the story.

For years, Owen believed that his sister was dead. When she did return, Owen still lost her to his best friend who he was at odds with over the disappearance of his sister. No Yang, no Amelia, and no Megan. Owen was just treading water in a pool he was sure to drown in. It was just a matter of time. But here comes the possibility of starting a real family with Teddy.

He proposed and she accepted which put them on a path fans have waited for. But Teddy started acting differently. Lost in her own demons, Teddy was not able to shake the feelings she has for Tom Korasick. In a moment of weakness, again, she sleeps with Tom but the entire ordeal is recorded in a voicemail to Owen by accident.

The sad part is, this was done on their wedding night. Owen calls his mom and says he’s caught up in surgery and won’t make it. Why does this keep happening to Owen? He’s basically one of the nicest characters on Grey’s Anatomy lately but in terms of love, the writers keep shunning him.

What will happen between Owen and Teddy this season remains to be seen. Now, Owen is no angel himself. He did cheat on Yang during their marriage and this may be a case of bad mojo rearing its ugly head against Owen. But still, mistakes were made but those were in the past. Teddy and Owen were supposed to be different. We were led to believe they were the true soulmates on Grey’s Anatomy when in fact, they’re just as screwed up like everyone else.
